Anantnag, May 8, 2026 — As part of a district-wide offensive against the production of narcotic substances, the Anantnag Police have formally arrested two women linked to separate illegal o***m poppy cultivation cases.
The arrests follow a series of field operations aimed at identifying and destroying illicit crops before they can be processed and trafficked.
The suspects were apprehended under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act following investigations by the Pahalgam Police Station:
• Case 1 (Wullarhama): Dilshada, wife of Sheikh Musa Qazim, was arrested in connection with FIR No. 27/2026. Authorities detected and subsequently destroyed illegal poppy crops situated on her property.
• Case 2 (Sofi Pora): Naseema, widow of Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, was arrested under FIR No. 31/2026. The arrest followed a formal investigation into the illegal cultivation of contraband on land under her possession.

Rescue Operation Underway in Hajin Following Jhelum Drowning Incident
On Friday afternoon, May 8, 2026, a tragic incident occurred in the Hajin area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, where three individuals fell into the River Jhelum.
The three men were washing tents on the banks of the river when one of them accidentally slipped into the water. The other two reportedly jumped in to save him but were overwhelmed by the strong current.
One person was successfully pulled from the river by locals and has been moved to a nearby health facility for treatment. Two others remain missing and are feared drowned.
