Story of heroics of a young officer, LIEUTINANT TRIVENI SINGH, 5 JAK LI, Ashok Chakra (P) whose raw courage averted what could have been a bloodbath at Railway Station.

It was day after New Year's in 2004. India was still coming out of the hang-over of the New Year Bash when information about a militant su***de attack came in. Tiger 5 JAK LI asked Lt Triveni Singh to alert the officers and the soldiers on duty to move to Jammu railway station. Lt Triveni believed this would delay the operation. He suggested instead, that he be allowed to lead the Quick Reaction Team to take on the terrorists.

As the team neared the railway station, Lt Triveni was told the terrorists were firing indiscriminately. Seven lives -- including that a policeman, two BSF jawans, one railway policeman and two civilians -- had already been lost. Several others were injured. In order to save time, he asked his driver to race the jeep across the railway tracks towards the captive station.

Reaching the spot within 10 minutes of the attack, Lt Singh and his QRT team of Ghatak commandos cordoned off the station and took a 'zigzag pattern' to come at a close range of the militants.

Lt. Triveni, who was leading his men from the front, succeeded in eliminating the first terrorist. Second terrorist lobbed a gr***de at him. A close quarter fight ensured and despite sustaining serious injuries in the gr***de attack, Lt. Triveni shot dead the second terrorist. The young officer then reported to the General Officer Commanding of his division. "Mission accomplished, Sir" before collapsing.

Balidanam Veer Lakshanam! Lt Triveni was to marry 2 months later, but he was destined to tie the knot with martyrdom. Today a grateful nation remembers and pays rich tributes to a real life hero. Rest easy buddy. You live on in our hearts!

The recipient of , as well as , the nation's highest & 2nd highest peacetime gallantry awards, Col N Jayachandran Nair, belonged to a rare breed of brave soldiers .......

remembers this courageous son of India on the 29th anniversary of his "Balidaan Diwas" today.

Col Nair hailed from Ernakulam in and belonged to the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment of . Displaying raw courage and unfaltering leadership, he made the supreme sacrifice on 20 Dec 1993 during a counter-insurgency operation in Nagaland.

During 1993, Col Nair’s unit was deployed in Nagaland, infested with insurgents engaged in anti-national activities. On Dec 20, 1993, Col Nair was leading an advance party of the convoy in Nagaland when they were ambushed by about one hundred insurgents. The insurgents in a pre-planned attack used automatic weapons and managed to kill 1 Junior Commissioned officer and 13 jawans on the spot. Col Nair too got injured in the attack but did not lose courage and took charge of the situation.

Col Nair though seriously injured, crawled to the other side of the road on his knees to get into a tactically advantageous position. Like a hero, he carried an injured soldier on his shoulders and directed his troops to fire at the rebels. This resulted in the halt of cross-firing from the rebels which gave Col Nair crucial time to tactically position his troops for the assault. Col Nair despite being wounded badly kept on motivating his troops and finally forced the rebels to retreat. Col Nair subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
