Tesla's new Model 3 headed to India

Tesla founder Elon Musk on Thursday said in a tweet that the company has added more countries to the pre-order page for Tesla Model 3, its most affordable car, in which India appears. The list of countries includes Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Tesla Motors gave a sneak preview on Thursday of its Model 3 sedan, saying more than 130,000 people had ordered the car, even though it is more than a year away from production.

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk unveiled a prototype of the Model 3 in Hawthorne, California outside Los Angeles to hundreds of Tesla owners and the media, saying the vehicle will go into production in 2017 at a starting price of $35,000.

The Model 3 is critical to the Silicon Valley automaker's growth plans and to sustaining its lofty stock price. Tesla shares have jumped in recent days in anticipation of the Model 3 launch.

The Model 3 will enter a crowded field of luxury and electric cars that includes gasoline-fueled models such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series, and electric models such as the forthcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV from General Motors Co.

India's fastest train Gatimaan Express to be launched on April 5

The Indian Railways has taken a cue from China and European countries like Britain and France to upgrade passenger amenities in its trains.

While the railways are set to introduce the first batch of trains stewards and hostesses on Gatimaan Express, the facility is quite popular in China, which has a vast railway network across the country. Bullet trains in China provide its passengers with several world class amenities including train hostesses.

Applying to become train hostess involves a rigorous interview procedure apart from physical appearance, language proficiency and general behaviour.

As a practice, five different professional exams are held in China to select bullet train attendants who are also given training course later. The guidelines to become one of the attendants are extremely strict and take into account everything from skills to body height.

In Japan too, stewards and hostesses in uniform greet passengers on bullet trains. They are also responsible for cleaning empty cars, rotate seats to the opposite direction, bow on exiting and promenade off the platform in two neat parallel rows.

Eurostar, the high speed railway service connecting London with Avignon, Brussels, Lille, Lyon, Marseille and Paris has a sizable number of train hostesses. With three classes of travel, Eurostar provides facilities like bar buffet in coaches for an array of food and drink. They also provide special facilities for children including kids' meals and a toddler meal box of a sandwich, drink, fruit and colouring book.

Complimentary three-course meal and drinks served at seat, including Champagne for the executive business class passengers. Another popular train service - TGV in France has been a leader in providing some top class amenities to its passengers.

From free newspapers and magazines to drinks and snacks - train attendants take care of every passenger needs during their journey. The trains as well as stations and lounges on TGV are equipped with WiFi. All passengers are provided welcome drink and snack on board while meals are available at passengers' seats on selected services.

Windows 10 reaches 270 million users: Microsoft

Windows 10 is now in use in 270 million devices, the tech giant said Wednesday, hailing a strong debut for the multiplatform operating system launched last year.

"Windows 10 is off to an amazing start," said chief executive Satya Nadella as he opened the Microsoft Build developers conference in San Francisco, saying the figures represent the "fastest ever" adoption of the Windows operating system.

The company is hoping the new version -- launched after a weak response to its prior one, Windows 8 and aimed at integrating with a variety of devices -- can help it gain traction in the mobile sector, where it lags behind Google Android and Apple iOS, and in emerging technologies for computing.

Although Microsoft dominates the personal computer software market, Windows runs on only a tiny fraction of smartphones.

The 270 million represents new computers and devices with Windows 10 installed as well as upgrades of existing gadgets.

Microsoft has set a goal of having the operating system in use in more than a billion devices by 2018, which would put it on a par with Apple, which said this year it has one billion active devices running iOS.

Microsoft said it would introduce an update of the operating system in the coming months that will make Windows 10 available for its Xbox One game console and enable multiple devices to use the Microsoft digital assistant known as Cortana.

The update will also step up use of biometrics for authentication, allowing users to log into computers and their applications with their fingerprints.

Microsoft will also expand the use of its Ink system, which enables the use of a stylus to add notes or graphics on a display.

Your smartphone to be your passport soon

Forgot your passport on way to the airport? Relax as De La Rue, a Britain-based commercial banknote printer and passport manufacturer, is working on a technology that can store
"paperless passports" in smartphones.

The technology would allow travellers to do without the booklets and switch to "paperless passports" that would act similar to mobile boarding cards enabling a tourist to travel through an airport without documents of any kind, the Telegraph reported.

"Paperless passports are one of many initiatives that we are currently looking at, but at the moment it is a concept that is at the very early stages of development," a spokesman of the company was quoted as saying.

However, the potential for forgery, global barriers and the distinct possibility of losing one's smartphone mean the security challenges present big hurdles, the report added.

"Digital passports on your phone will require new hardware on the device in order to securely store the electronic passport so it cannot be copied from the phone," David Jevans from security company Proofpoint was quoted as saying.

"It will also have to be communicated wirelessly to passport readers, because doing it onscreen like an airline ticket QR code can be copied or spoofed, he added.

The "paperless passport" service is already under the testing mode.

Samsung launches three new variants of Gear S2 smartwatch

South Korean electronic firm Samsung on Monday launched three new variants of the Gear S2 smartwatch and a whole new set of applications and dial faces for Indian customers.

The wearable will be available across all Samsung retail channels at a price of Rs.24,300 for the Gear S2 white and Rs.34,900 for the Gear S2 Classic gold and platinum variants.

"The introduction of these new Gear S2 variants with additional apps and watch faces will further add to the style and convenience quotient," Manu Sharma, director, mobile business, Samsung India Electronics, said in a statement.

The new apps such as cab services from Uber, G'Night sleep tracking app, My Notes in Gear and an all-new YouTube browsing app Xenozu are now available with already available innovative and comprehensive solutions around health, fitness, connectivity and style.

Gear S2 will also feature a host of new games, enabling the intuitive rotating bezel as a natural game controller for games such as Hextris and classic car racing Vroom Rider.

The stainless steel chassis makes the devices very light and they sit slim and sleek on the wrist.

The devices consist of a 1.2-inch 302 pixel-per-inch density Super AMOLED display with a ceramic-coated gorilla glass.

The Gear S2 classic can be paired with any standard 20mm watch straps while for Gear S2, strap adaptor is available in Samsung's accessory selection.

Celkon plans 10 new models

Mobile handset maker Celkon plans to introduce at least 10 new models during the April-June quarter and commission its new factory near Tirupati by July, according to a senior company official.

The Hyderabad-headquartered firm aims to increase its market share in the Indian mobile market to 6-7 per cent from four per cent now in the next one year supported by new products, additional capacity and favourable growth trend in the market, Mr Murali Reteineni, Executive Director, Celkon Impex, said. He also said the company was planning to commission its upcoming mobile production unit at the Tirupati Electronics Manufacturing Cluster by July.

The Cluster, which will also house similar units of mobile production units Micromax, Lava and Karbon brands. The unit will have a capacity to produce four lakh units in the initial phase.Meanwhile, Celkon aims to rope in a few key component makers to improve localisation in its handsets.

Mercedes Benz introduces C Class 250 d sedan

Luxury car maker Mercedes Benz India on Wednesday introduced the C Class 250 d sedan in the mid-size luxury segment and announced its local production.

“The all new C-Class completely redefined the mid-size luxury sedan segment in India and created for itself a new territory of supremacy,” Roland Folger, MD and CEO of Mercedes Benz India, said in a statement.

Priced at Rs. 44.36 lakh (ex-showroom Pune), the sedan is equipped with 9G — TRONIC transmission and a 2,142 cc diesel engine capable of producing 500 Nm of torque with a speed of 0-100 km per hour in 6.6 seconds.

Other features include LED Intelligent Light System, Garmin Map Pilot, 17 inch alloy wheels and ambient lighting among others.

Mercedes Benz already sells C 200 and C 220 models under the C Class and has commenced local production of 250 d to catch up with the demand and cut down the waiting period.

“The overwhelming response for the new C-Class drove us to commence local manufacturing of the C 250 d simultaneously with its introduction in India,” added Mr. Folger.
