At the 18th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), Swiss animation filmmaker Georges Schwizgebel chaired a masterclass titled “Georges Schwizgebel’s Approach to Animation”, offering audiences a close look at his celebrated career and distinct visual style.

With over five decades of work, he reflected on a practice shaped by hand crafted animation, often using acrylic painting and experimental methods. His films are widely known for the strong connection between music and imagery that creates a lyrical flow on screen.

The session highlighted how Schwizgebel continues to build meaning through image and sound beyond dialogue.

Films can do more than tell stories. They can shape perspectives, start conversations, and leave us seeing the world a little differently.

In the 18th edition of MIFF, Shri Sudhir Mungantiwar reminds us, cinema reflects society and holds the power to inspire transformation, sometimes through a single moment, a single scene, or a single dialogue.

In Zima, directors Tomek Popakul and Kasumi Ozeki create a world that feels both distant and deeply familiar. Through stark monochromatic visuals and restrained bursts of colour, they shape a haunting winter landscape where warmth and violence exist side by side.

What makes Zima worth watching is the way it communicates through mood and feeling rather than explanation.
For those drawn to animation that challenges form and expands the possibilities of storytelling, Zima is a reminder that cinema can be felt as much as it can be understood.
