പ്രശസ്തമായ കണ്ണമ്പ്ര വേലയുടെ ഭാഗമായി കണ്ണമ്പ്ര ശ്രീ കുറുമ്പ കാവിലെ കൂത്തുമാടത്തിൽ തോൽപാവകൾ കഥ പറഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങുന്നു.

Tholpavakoothu, the ancient shadow puppetry of Kerala, is a mesmerizing ritualistic art form predominantly preserved in the Bhadrakali temples of Palakkad. Rooted in deep cultural traditions, this "play of leather puppets" is performed as a devotional offering to the Goddess, who, according to legend, missed the epic battle between Rama and Ravana.
Cultural Tradition & Rituals
The performances take place in a dedicated temple theatre called the Koothumadam. Led by the scholarly Pulavars, the troupe narrates the Kamba Ramayana through a sophisticated blend of Sanskrit, Tamil, and Malayalam. These festivals often span 7 to 41 nights, where the rhythmic pulse of the Ezhupara (drum) and the glow of 21 coconut shell lamps create a bridge between the divine and the devotee.
Exquisite Aesthetics
The visual aesthetics of Tholpavakoothu are truly haunting. Intricately carved puppets, traditionally made from deer skin, feature thousands of tiny perforations that allow light to filter through, creating delicate patterns on the screen. The flickering oil lamps lend a golden, ethereal quality to the shadows, turning the temple courtyard into a space where ancient myths breathe again through light and movement.
