At the Metalogic 9th Annual Conference – Make in Steel, Make in Bharat, Ms. Sminu Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal SAW Limited, highlighted the often-overlooked but critical role of pipes in defence, infrastructure and strategic applications.

She noted that while global pipe demand is growing faster than global GDP, India needs greater availability of specialised, value-added steel to help domestic pipe manufacturers compete globally.

Her call to the steel industry was clear: increase the focus on steel specifically developed for pipe manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports, enabling Indian pipe makers to strengthen their global competitiveness.

She also emphasised the importance of niche products, smaller quantities and value engineering, noting that every customer matters and that specialised steel can create significantly greater value and margins.

“Pipes can truly be Make in Bharat only when the steel is also made available for domestic players.”

“The question is no longer how much steel India produces, but whether India is making the steel it needs.”

At the Metalogic 9th Annual Conference – Make in Steel, Make in Bharat, Dr. Govind Bajargan, Deputy Director & Senior Research Scientist, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre,Isro, highlighted the critical role of strategic steels in India’s journey towards technological and industrial self-reliance.

He shared how India’s space programme has successfully indigenised critical materials for rocket motors, cryogenic applications and high-strength structures through collaboration between research laboratories, academia and industry.

Looking ahead, he emphasised the need to move beyond indigenisation towards designing and developing India’s own advanced materials—materials that are stronger, smarter and more cost-effective.

He also highlighted emerging opportunities in additive manufacturing, specialised powders and wires, and low-MOQ production for strategic applications.

His message was clear: India’s future in space, defence and advanced technology will depend not just on manufacturing products, but on designing, developing and manufacturing the materials that make them possible.

“Steel has become a vital element of national security.”

At the Metalogic 9th Annual Conference – Make in Steel, Make in Bharat, Mr. Kunal Bhardwaj, India Head – Sales, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, highlighted how geopolitical turbulence and rising trade barriers are making domestic steel capability increasingly important for India.

He shared ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India’s journey of expanding capacity while building capabilities to deliver high-quality, value-added steel for Indian consumers. From scaling capacity towards 40 million tonnes, to developing specialised products for solar, roofing, automotive, pipelines, defence and deep-sea applications, the focus remains firmly on strengthening Make in India.

He also highlighted AM/NS India’s decarbonisation roadmap, renewable energy investments, scrap recycling and process efficiencies to reduce the carbon intensity of steelmaking.

From advanced automotive steel to specialised grades that can replace imports, his message was clear: India’s steel future lies in building capacity, technology and capability together.

At the Metalogic 9th Annual Conference – Make in Steel, Make in Bharat, Mr. VR Sharma, Managing Director, Jindal Steel Ltd., shared a powerful perspective on India’s steel industry, its competitiveness and the road to Atmanirbhar Bharat.

He highlighted the need for India to build stronger domestic capabilities, expand value-added steel, strengthen shipbuilding and capital goods manufacturing, and reduce dependence on imports.

He also showcased Jindal Steel’s focus on high-strength, lightweight and specialised steels for applications ranging from pipelines and defence to nuclear energy, hydrogen transportation and heavy vehicles.

His message was clear: India’s next phase of steel growth cannot be driven by volume alone. It must be driven by innovation, value engineering, stronger and lighter products, and deeper domestic consumption.

At the inaugural session of the Metalogic 9th Annual Conference – Make in Steel, Make in Bharat, Mr. Natarajan TN, Director (Commercial), Steel Authority of India Limited, highlighted the crucial role of steel in India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

He emphasised that the next phase of infrastructure—from bridges, expressways and railway stations to airports and buildings—will require greater use of steel for faster and more efficient project ex*****on.

Mr. Natarajan also stressed the need to reduce dependence on imports and build resilient domestic supply chains, particularly for strategic and special steels.

With SAIL investing around ₹4,000 crore to expand capabilities in special steels for aerospace, defence and other critical applications, he reiterated the importance of strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.

“Everything that can be made in steel, should be made in steel.”
