La Ultra

La Ultra World's cruelest race (111, 222, 333, 555 k), held in extreme Ladakh conditions since 2010 • ‘Moving Mountains Within’ chronicles edition-X (2019)

We were told in 2009 that this was an impossible, hence we did it, making Impossible yell I'm Possible. La Ultra is run in LaDakh, the high altitude desert in the Indian Himalayas. 3 high mountain passes fall on the route that are all in excess of 17,400 ft, leading to oxygen in the air, as less as 60% lesser than in the plains. Within a matter of 7-8 hrs, temperatures could vary from minus 12°C t

o 40°C. Over the years, the distance has increased from 222 k to 333 k and in 2019 there was also a 555 k category. We also reduced the distances from 222 k to 111 k and again in 2019 we had 55 k too. The basic learning has been that we just don't know what the human limits are, but to do justice to our limits, we need to lower the height of each step too. For that same reason we are now lowering the distances further by introducing 11, 22 and 33 k categories. In the April 2022 edition, during the acclimatisation period, we have created LaDakh Ultra Fest for you and your family to experience that it should be. You'll get to have a royal experience with the Namgyal Dynasty, visit the Stok Palace, be part of a Polo exhibition match and then try your hand at Archery. You'll also get literally walk down the memory lane as part of the heritage old Leh town walk. We'll together enjoy a picnic on Wari La, the most gorgeous mountain pass in Leh, which happens to be where the April edition of La Ultra will be run. Come join us, and discover the true you.

We live in the same house. Scroll on the same couch. Yet feel miles apart.

Bonding doesn’t happen by talking more. It happens by moving together.

When bodies move, hierarchies soften. Breath syncs. Silence becomes safe again.

Bonding Runs are guided movement journeys for partners, parents & children, siblings, friends.

No pace. No pressure. No performance.

This is not a race. It’s a pause.

Bonding. With those who matter.

“You really have created the world’s finest masterpiece of ultra-running.”

Those words came from Mark Steven Woolley. A PhD academic. A teacher of Physics and Theory of Knowledge. An adventurer. An ultra-runner.

Across five editions of La Ultra - The High, Mark covered 1,316 kilometres in the Indian Himalayas, including multiple returns to the 333 km. He knew endurance at its extremes.

But what stayed with him wasn’t distance. It was this realisation: running is never individual.

The runner only puts a pair of legs out there. Everything else is carried by people.

Layers of care. Quiet vigilance. Holding space when things unravel.

Since 2010, La Ultra has lived this philosophy. Care before performance. Presence before protocols.

Bonding Runs are not a departure from that truth. They are its distillation.

Bonding Runs begin here.

And if any part of this stayed with you, we’re always open to a conversation. DMs are open.

Ravitej, Vijay, Ajay, Krishna & gps kick started the 69 Bonding Crawl-Walk-Run in Bengaluru. They were at it for over 💯 minutes. Speed & distance doesn’t matter, since it’s about Crawl-Walk-Run. It’s about connecting & bonding while we listen, talk and feel. It’s about self-transcendence.

Starting this Sunday, we kickstart start La Ultra - The High’s ‘Bonding Crawl-Walk-Run’ series, where the intent is to help to connect with their loved & with themselves, because in today’s fast paced noisy world, we don’t tend to listen. It’ll be 3 hrs of connecting. It doesn’t matter what speed you move at. We’ll go up and down between US & Canadian embassy on Nyaya Marg, a distance of 1 km, motivating each other.

It’s meditation in motion, inspired by Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3,100 mile / 4,989 km (yep, you read that right)race in New York. I’ve had the good fortune of meeting the organizers, phenomenal folks.

As last few slides show, we have been getting people to move, making them Crawl-Walk-Run, helping them become their better versions, by becoming their best friends, by bonding with their loved ones.

But to connect, disconnect from the digital world at least for those 3 hrs. Leave your phones in the car, and definitely don’t listen to music.

When: 26th Oct, Sunday
Reporting location: NDMC Parking at Malcha Marg
Reporting Time: 6:06 am
Time: 6:30 am - 9:30 am
Entry fee: Free, no registration, but respond to this message

Any friend(s) in Milan, Italy, from 5-9 November?

Our documentary film, Moving Mountains Within, has been included by International Jury of “SPORT MOVIES & TV 2024 – 42nd MILANO INTERNATIONAL FICTS FEST”, the most important Worldwide Festival dedicated to Television, Cinema, Communication and Sport Culture - Final of 20 Festivals (around the 5 Continents) of the “World FICTS Challenge” in “DOCUMENTARY - INDIVIDUAL SPORT” – into the list of “NOMINATIONS” for the following categories: “Guirlande d’Honneur 2024”, “Mention d'Honneur 2024” and “Special Awards 2024”.

None of us from the team will be able to go as visa interview dates aren't available in next week or so. It'll be wonderful if some friend can represent us.

Fifteen years ago, experts scoffed at the idea of running 222 kilometers through Ladakh, a journey that would include conquering the supposedly impassable Khardung La. Undeterred, I rallied a band of like-minded adventurers to not only attempt this feat but to double down, crossing two of the region’s highest mountain passes.

As more and more runners defied the odds, we pushed the limits further, extending the race to 333 kilometers with three towering peaks to overcome. Driven by a thirst for discovery, we conceived of the ultimate test: a 555-kilometer odyssey across five Himalayan giants. Would anyone finish? Could anyone finish? Find out in Moving Mountains Within, a film documenting the epic journey of La Ultra - The High, now streaming on Jio Cinema.

This epic ultramarathon isn't just a race; it's a journey of self-discovery. From 111km to 555km, runners push beyond limits, proving that the mind is the ultimate battlefield. Inspired by life's challenges, La Ultra ignites human potential.

It's not about external challenges. The real battle is within. Society often builds mountains of doubt in our minds, limiting our potential. But we can turn these obstacles into stepping stones. Whether it's a small step like starting to exercise or a giant leap like overcoming cancer, believing in yourself is the key. It's about proving to yourself that 'impossible' is just a word.

Also, ’Moving Mountains Within’ just won the GRAND PRIX (best film award) at the Slovenia International Film Festival! This win lands us a coveted spot at the Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs in Milan this November.

La Ultra - The High was conceptualised in 2009 and the very first edition was organised in 2010 in Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas. It isn't about running, but about life. We started off with 222 km but by the 10th edition, we had also come up with 555 km category along with introducing 55, 111, 222 and 333 km.
