The All India Radio was modelled after the BBC, to carry out the mandate of ‘Education, Information, Entertainment’. This is the mode of media communication that had perhaps the most outreach in the nascent independent Indian state. It was the state's arm to mould the new citizen of independent India. And so, what could and could not be aired was a matter of deep concern to the state. . . READ MORE HERE https://bit.ly/4uPdbWu to get a glimpse of what this year's annual conference covers.

For our next discussion of DOING HISTORY, a collaboration between HISTORY FOR PEACE and THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY PROJECT, we bring you

Imagining History:
A Century of Gita Press

Facilitated by
Akshaya Mukul

Akshaya Mukul is a citizen historian and journalist, the author of Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India and Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover: The Many Lives of Agyeya. He was a journalist for over two decades, working at the TOI, HT, Pioneer and Asian Age.

This interactive session discusses how peoples’ historical imagination or consciousness is constituted. It will do so by taking the audience through the history of ‘Kalyan’, a monthly magazine of Gita Press, now a century old. Kalyan was an everyday form of literature with deep social impact in the Hindi-speaking world and went a long way in enabling a kind of historical imagination that has now become common sense.

For our next discussion of DOING HISTORY, a collaboration of HISTORY FOR PEACE and THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY PROJECT, we bring you DOING LAW! BY SHAHRUKH ALAM.

A historian relies on her sources; a court of law relies on the evidence presented to it.
However, when sifting through evidence, it is also important to think about the story, or the case, one is trying to prove. Are we leading evidence to establish guilt? To prove innocence? To what end?
Second, how is evidence collected?
And finally, is evidence even important, if we think we know that somebody is guilty? There could be instant punishment without going into procedure and proof.
This talk examines the processes of the court of law and how it parallels the craft of the historian.

Speaker Description: Shahrukh Alam is a constitutional lawyer, human rights activist and an advocate at the Indian Supreme Court.

Hindi:
BY SHAHRUKH ALAM।

2025 marked a special milestone for History for Peace—we completed ten years.

Ten years of learning, sharing, convening, questioning, hoping and at times, despairing. When we began, all we had was a belief: that teachers must be part of the peace-building conversations we had been having with students at PeaceWorks since 2003. We did not imagine the generosity, solidarity, and intellectual companionship we would receive from educators, scholars, and institutions along the way.

And yet, ten years on, when we ask ourselves has anything changed?—the answer remains uncertain. But what is certain is this: the work must go on, especially in a world marked by conflict, uncertainty and shifting orders.

This newsletter offers a glimpse into the ideas, conversations and collaborations that shaped the past year—shared with openness and care by those who continue to think, teach and imagine with us.

As we step into 2026 and wish for a more just and peaceful world—we invite you to look back with us at the journey of the past twelve months at History for Peace.
