On the second of January, it is Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti.
Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru or saint in Sikhism. He was born on December 22, 1666 according to the Gregorian calendar, but his birth anniversary is calculated according to a lunar calendar and thus being celebrated on this day. He became a Guru at the tender age of 9 and had a big impact on Sikhs with all the miraculous deeds he did during his lifetime. Throughout his life, he stood up against the Mughals who ruled during that time and fought against injustice. It was his leadership that inspired the courage in people to rise against the oppressive rule of the time. He set up the Khalsa, a military force of saint-soldiers which he baptized. Under his leadership, they followed a strict moral code and spiritual discipline. He was both a military and spiritual leader to his people and his courage and teachings inspire many, even today.

He made the Sikh religion what it is and his teachings significantly form the core of the religion. It was he who declared the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Scripture to be the permanent Sikh Guru and his teachings are respected by those of other religions as well.

16 December- Vijay Diwas

On 16th December 1972, the Pakistani forces surrendered to the allied forces consisting of the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan. Hence this special day is a remembrance day for the brave soldiers and for all those people who had fought and lost their lives in successfully achieving this noble cause. A 3-day event is organised in Kolkata from 14-16 December.
