In Sringeri Shankarmath-
Sainikpuri, Secunderabad.
Day 9:-
MAHISASURAMARDINI
On Ninth Day During Sri Sharada Saran Navarathi festival days at Sringeri Shankarmath- Sainikpuri, Sri Vijaya Ganapathi Devalayam, Sainikpuri,Secunderabad on Sunday, which happens to be Aswiyuja suddha Navami, the presiding deity Sri Sharadamba will be adorned as Mahisaasura Mandini Alankaram.
The Alankaram is considered to be the most ‘ugra avataram' (fiery form) of Devi. As she killed Mahisha on Navami it is known as Maharnavami.
the Devas assembled and given their combined divine energies coalesce into goddess Durga. The newborn Durga led a battle against Mahishasura, riding a lion and killed him. Thereafter she is named Mahishasura mardini, meaning the Killer of Mahishasura.
In ‘chandi saptasati’, it is stated Sri Mahalakshmi Devi with ‘ashthadasa bhujas’ (eighteen hands) killed Mahishasura. And over a period of time, she popularly became as Kanaka Durga. She holds a trisula, a trident, in her hand, and rides Tiger. Mahishasura Mardhini, in this appearance, has the powers of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara and armed with different kinds of weapons fought fiercely for nine days.
The legend says, Mahishasura, the king of 'Rakshasas’(demons) defeated Indra, and began torturing everyone. All devatas went to Siva and Kesava along with Brahma urging them to relieve them from tortures of Mahishasura. An enormous beam of light emerged out of all the angry devas and took the form of a woman. The Devas were very pleased and presented her the energies of their powerful godly weapons. Siva gave his trisulam (trident), Varuna gave his Sankham (conch), Yama gave his khadgam (sword), Surya installed all his powerful rays of light in her hair. Thus every Deva gave his power to her. Collecting all those powers, goddess Durga killed Mahishasura’s warriors Chikshurudu, Chamarudu, Udrudu, Bhashkuludu, Bidaludu and others. Durga, wielding the weapons of the gods, goes to battle against Mahishasura riding a lion. Durga cuts off the head of the buffalo demon and kills Mahishasura with her mighty sword. Durga can do this because she is neither man nor god, but a goddess. She beheaded him with the chakra which Vishnu had given her. Thus she freed the world from Mahishasur's tyranny. Indra and the other gods returned to the heavens again, and all was well. Since then, Durga is worshipped during the Navratras and is addressed as Mahishasur Mardini.
The day Goddess Durga killed the wicked demon Mahishasura is celebrated as Vijayadasami . This day is also celebrated as a victory of Good over Evil.
