Every Assamese recalls the magnanimous and magnificent achievements of Roopkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwalla with pride and grandeur. He was considered an Assamese cultural icon, deeply revered for his creative vision and output and is popularly called the Roopkonwar of Assamese culture. His death anniversary (17 January) is celebrated as Silpi divas (Artists' Day) in his honor and we are proud to orga

nize this event. The significance is- everyone has been remembering Jyoti prasad but with the passage of time and tide, that special and exhilarating piece of culture has been depleting. In the modern world people are so busy amidst the modern culture and westernization which has resulted in significant nonchalance among the masses. But NBC has done this program keeping in mind about the youth, the new culture and the contemporary society. It is inevitable need to create awareness among new generation and unveil the pride of Assam Jyoti Prasad in a new way- this is the importance of our program!

In a period that saw the beginning of Indian Cinema, Agarwala was (and still is) lauded as the creator of Assamese cinema with Joymoti (1935) and Indramalati (1939).

Jyotiprasad Agarwala also re-published the newspaper ‘Axomiya’ in 1944. He also established an Assamese music school in Tezpur.

FACT 5:
The most valuable gift of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala to Assamese entertainment is Joymoti (1935), the first cinema. He first setup a studio ‘Chitraban’ in Bholaguri tea estate in Tezpur in 1934. He also built a cinema hall ‘Junaki’ in Tezpur in 1937.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala had written around 300 songs, many of which he had set to music himself. Collectively, these songs are called "Jyoti xongit".

FACT 3:
Jyoti Prasad Agarwala began writing since the age of 14 years. Around then, he recorded the renowned play ‘Sonit-Konwari’. For the next few years, amidst his understudy days, he composed numerous short stories, specially for youngsters. Some of the plays composed by him are Rupalim, Karengar Ligiri, Lobhita, and etc. His plays are staged till date in Assam.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala started his education in Tezpur Government High School and completed his matriculation there. While in high school, he joined the freedom movement. After matriculation, he joined National College of Calcutta. For his graduation he went to Edinburgh University, Britain. He also joined M.A but before finishing it he went to Germany to study film-making.

Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the first Assamese filmmaker is one of the leading cultural modelers of twentieth century Assam.
He was born on 17 June, 1903 in Tamulbari Tea Estate of Dibrugarh. His father was Paramanada Agarwala and mother was Kiranmayee.
