In stifling times, beyond the reach of human intelligence lies something more futile. “In the face of pain, there are no heroes” said George Orwell , in which lies the quintessence of “hostage’ : a one act play inspired by ‘The Saint’ by Jean Tay, George Orwell’s 1984 and various literary verses from contemporary Indian poets.
The play progresses as the Guard and the detainee unravel their life stories. Despite the striking differences and sides of believes, the two connect on the basic emotional instincts of pain, hatred and turmoil. The play deals with the repercussions of challenging status quo: dissent. The events that take place in the prison cell reflect the inter and intra politics of the characters and the large sects of life they represent; leaving space for each viewer to paint the story in their own way.

Upstage performed it's Annual Production 2019-20 at Zakdram'20 organised by Aaghaaz Theatre Group of Zakir Hussain (E) College and won the 2nd prize!

We're proud to announce that our team member, Nikita Samant was also awarded Best Actor (Female) at the same event.

We would like to congratulate the other teams for their respective wins and thank the hosts for their great hospitality!

Theatre is not just about making a production or performing a story. It has been, more than anything, a mode of expression, liberation and change.
So it seems more than apt to use theatre as a tool of protest, lest we forget that it should reflect what one stand for and what they believe in, and that art and reform have always gone hand in hand
After all, what good is our art if it fails to talk about the atrocities taking place right at our doorstep. What good is our solidarity if theatre- something that is a part of us, and something we are a part of- does not become a medium through which one can contribute to the movement.

Therefore, here we present our Voice of Dissent : Anant'20 - An Unworded Epitaph, the Annual Stage Play Event of Gargi College.
