The festival is organized annually in Delhi, under the aegis of Rekhta Foundation – a not for profit organization devoted to the preservation and promotion of Urdu language and culture

Varun Grover beautifully explains how Urdu has always been a language of literary creation, and its relationship with Hindi cinema is a perfect example of this. When Hindi film songs first started, established Urdu poets brought their rich background and set the artistic foundation. This created a strong bond where Urdu poetry gave film music its true essence, and cinema helped keep the language alive for a much wider audience.
