Rhyme (prasam) conventions in Carnatic-music lyrics.

Humans naturally seek and create patterns. Starting from alliteration, the easiest pattern to recognise in poetry, we wonder whether rhyme rules in Carnatic-music lyrics are a happy mix of rhyme in Tamil and Sanskrit literature.

The main part of the presentation will focus on rhyme conventions in Carnatic music. Three types of rhyme, of which dvitiyAkSharaprAsa (edhugai) is perhaps the most widely known, will be presented. The rhyme-structure in lyrics will be discussed through simple and sophisticated examples, comprising mostly compositions of the trinity. A few of these examples can be interactive. Some exceptions, inevitable in art, will also be presented.

Towards the end, interesting inferences will be suggested, with a caution that the analysis should not be carried too far given the nature of Carnatic music.
