Maasi Magam is a very important festival in South India and Srilanka .It is the day of the full moon in a very powerful phase combined with the ruling star of the ancestors or pitrus - Magam .It is believed that many gods descend on earth at this auspicious time because Lord Vishnu as per a promise made to Varuna takes a dip in the sea to cleanse all the rivers and lakes and water bodies.Maasi Magam is celebrated with fervour in Kumbakonam with deities and devotees taking a dip in the Mahamaham tank.
