Title: Re-examining the Relationship between colonial building practices and native craftsmen: Growse’s Bulandshahr Town Hall

Description: This research delves into the unconventional architectural practices of F.S. Growse in late 19th century Colonial India, focusing on his notable work, the Bulandshahr Town Hall. By examining the relationship between colonial building practices and native craftsmen, it sheds light on Growse's use of traditional Indian methods and challenges the dominant Western approach. The study expands our understanding of colonial architecture by analyzing the building's biography and Growse's interaction with traditional craftsmen. Through comparative analysis of civic buildings, archival data, and photographs, it explores the role of ornamentation and its contemporary application with traditional influences. This research establishes Growse's professional institution as a significant institution in the building production of late 19th century.

As we reach the final day of our enchanting Heritage Walk series, we invite you to witness a powerful installation by Aarti Zaveri at the Bathing Ghat titled "The Cry of Kali River: Do You Care?"

The river holds a profound significance in human existence, shaping civilizations, cultures, and traditions throughout history. Kali Nadi, once an integral part of Bulandshahr with its historical ghats and close connection to daily life, has now transformed into a mere toxic stream.

In this installation, Aarti uses collected water from the Kali Nadi to create a Yantra—a symbol of ancient wisdom and positive energy. The Yantra, widely used in various parts of India, serves as a beacon of hope and understanding. By placing it on the banks of Kali Nadi, Aarti extends her installation to all those who seek to witness a vibrant flowing river that nurtures life.

Throughout history, there existed a harmonious balance between humanity and rivers, a mutual dependence that sustained life. However, in our modern age, we have lost that vital connection, resulting in the degradation and numerous environmental challenges we face today.

The colours red and black on the Yantra installation symbolize the diverse energy of the river. It stands as a celebration of its magnificence and calls upon like-minded individuals and society to intervene, to restore the beauty of coexistence between humans and the river.

This remarkable work belongs to an ongoing series initiated by artist Aarti Zaveri. Since 2016, she has been dedicated to exploring the elements, particularly water and rivers, through her art, aiming to raise awareness and foster sensitivity towards these precious resources.

Let us reflect on the vital role rivers play in our lives and the urgent need to restore their vitality. May this installation serve as a poignant reminder that it is our collective responsibility to care for and protect these lifelines of our civilization.

Step into history at the Town Hall during our Heritage Walk, where you'll encounter the thought-provoking art installation "Reminding Recurrences from the Past." This captivating artwork pays homage to the rich architectural legacy of Bhulandshahr's Town Hall and invites us to reflect on the interconnectedness of time and memory.

Designed under the supervision of Frederic Growse, a British civil servant and collector of the region in 1878, the Town Hall stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of local craftsmanship and architectural vision. Its lofty interiors, adorned with intricately carved domes and arches, exude a sense of grandeur and wonder.

The installation aims to recreate history, invoking memories of a glorious past while embracing a leap of hope for the future. Through hanging mirrors delicately threaded on golden strings and clusters of representative hands, the artwork symbolizes the intertwining of present and past, acting as a reminder that all configurations of time are destined to meet, interact, and leave their mark.

By prioritizing the deconstruction of established historical narratives, the installation challenges the colonial and post-colonial lenses through which we view our history. It invites us to remember, recreate, and reclaim the stories of the subaltern, shining a light on hidden truths that deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.

As we immerse ourselves in this powerful display, let us remember the words of George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Together, let's honor our history, embrace our heritage, and pave the way for a more enlightened future.

It leads to the Town Hall and was built in the late 19th century by Rao Umrao Singh of Kuchesar, who donated a significant fund for its construction. The project was encouraged by Frederic Growse, a British civil servant of the Indian Civil Service, who had been appointed collector of the region in 1878.
