SCORE:

CSE-A 1-0 Mech-A

In what turned out to be a tight and closely fought affair, CSE lifted the trophy for the first time in three years, which they surely feel was too long. CSE took an early lead through Ninad Dighe, whose neat finish past the goalkeeper ultimately turned out to be the winner. Mechanical will feel hard done by the goal as there were strong claims for offside against the goalscorer, but the linesman's flag stayed down. Mechanical had many chances of their own, but they were luckless for the most part, with Sai Mahesh hitting both the posts with a wonderful bicycle kick, and going close with another free kick. The Mechanical back line endured quite a few nervy moments, with CSE looking to break on the counter, with it nearly managing to pay off with another goal, with Ninad sweeping wide after good work by Karthik Nambiar down the right. After the goal, however, CSE dug deep and did not allow much space for Mechanical to operate, frustrating them into misplaced passes and poor decisions. CSE midfielders Shaurya Soni and Nitin Sriram were imperious, sniffing out danger and cutting out mechanical attacks while instigating their own counters. There were quite a few controversial moments, with a few handball and penalty claims being waved down by the referee along with the contentious decision to not award offside for the winning goal. Ultimately, CSE held on to win the final 1-0, with the full time whistle sparking jubilant celebrations from those who wore red. For Mechanical, it was a case of ruing missed chances and mistakes at the back, with it clearly not being their day.

Since things have been very hectic, this year's inter department football has really flown under the radar, with various commitments keeping all of us busy. We did have some really enthralling games, with a brief description given below.

QUARTERFINALS:

Last year's finalists Mech-A and CSE-A both cruised to victories. ECE beat CSE-B without much fuss. Elsewhere, we had underdogs Mech-B pull of a huge upset by beating former champions ISE on penalties after a goalless game. All but one game saw players score hattricks, making it a rather interesting side story of who would win the golden boot.
Favourites Mech-A beat BBA (6th Sem) 5-0, with Chandrahaasan Ravichandiran scoring a hattrick, and Sushil Athreya and the returning Sai Mahesh scoring one apiece.
Runners up from last year and looking to banish the demons of the last two years, CSE-A brushed aside BBA (4th Sem) 4-0 with Karthik Nambiar scoring a hattrick and newcomer Vishwajeet Hogale scoring one.
Finalists from two years ago and eagerly seeking to make an impact this year as well, ECE beat CSE-B 3-0, with captain, Ayush Mohan, leading from the front to score all three goals.
Winners from 2017, ISE, despite being weakened by the lack of a first year setup, played Mech-B, with ISE clear favourites to win. However, Mech-B kept things tight at the back, led by captain Benoy Mathew and centre back Abhinav Sarkar. The game ended goalless and went to penalties, where Mech-B won 4-3.

SEMIFINALS:

Overwhelming favourites to go through, CSE-A were made to work hard by Mech-B in the first semifinal, with one goal separating the teams at the full time whistle, scored by Karthik Nambiar to send CSE-A through to the finals.
Last year's champions, Mech-A, beat ECE 2-0 courtesy of goals from Chandrahaasan and Sai Mahesh. ECE had a few glimpses of goal, but didn't really trouble Mech-A's captain and goalkeeper, Ananth Somanath.

The final will be held on Friday, 5th April, 2019, and sees a repeat of last year's final. Will Mechanical lift the trophy yet again, or can CSE hijack their bid and win the trophy themselves? Come find out at our football ground and help contribute to an electric atmosphere, and you can be sure to witness a good spectacle full of emotion and drama.
