Dinesh Karthik to play for Paarl Royals in the SA20
The 39-year-old is set to become the first Indian player to feature in the tournament
Dinesh Karthik is set to become the first Indian player to feature in the SA20. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Karthik will join Paarl Royals as an overseas player ahead of the new season starting January 9.
The SA20 will be the first tournament Karthik will play since announcing retirement in June on the day he turned 39. Karthik, who played 180 internationals for India, last featured in IPL 2024 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have now signed him up as a mentor-cum-batting coach.
On the T20 circuit, Karthik is rated by his peers among the sharpest pundits owing to his vast experience in the shortest format. Karthik, currently covering the Hundred for Sky Sports, featured in 401 T20s and, in the IPL, played for six teams including leading Kolkata Knight Riders. Karthik also was among the fittest players in IPL, having missed just two matches in 17 seasons.
Only retired Indian players are allowed by BCCI to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Last year, Ambati Rayudu turned up to play for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL while Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan featured for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. Two years ago, Suresh Raina was part of the Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10.
Paarl Royals announced their retentions ahead of the new season last week, with captain David Miller, Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo making the cut. Royals made the Qualifiers in the last SA20 edition but suffered five straight losses including a nine-wicket thumping in the Eliminator against Joburg Super Kings.
Paarl Royals squad
David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Bjorn Fortuin, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dinesh Karthik, Mitchell van Buuren, Codi Yusuf, Keith Dudgeon, Nqaba Peter, Kwena Maphaka, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Dayyaan Galiem (Traded in)

Ashwin fifty powers Dindigul Dragons to maiden TNPL title
A collective effort by their bowlers limited Lyca Kovai Kings, in their third straight final, to 129 for 7
Dindigul Dragons 131 for 4 (Ashwin 52, Indrajith 32, Siddharth 1-14) beat Lyca Kovai Kings 129 for 7 (Arvindh 27, Atheeq 25, Vignesh 2-15, Varun 2-26, Warrier 2-26) by six wickets
A 46-ball 52 from R Ashwin at No. 3 following a collective strong bowling display helped Dindigul Dragons to their maiden Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) title. It was Ashwin's third successive fifty in TNPL 2024.
Lyca Kovai Kings, in their third straight final, were restricted to 129 for 7 - thanks to two-wicket hauls from Sandeep Warrier, Varun Chakravarthy and P Vignesh each - with Dragons overhauling it with six wickets and ten balls to spare at Chepauk. Ashwin also contributed with four stingy overs for just 13 runs.
After being inserted in, Kings raced away to 48 for 1 in five overs. But Varun struck twice in two balls in the final over of the powerplay to get rid of S Sujay (22 off 12) and U Mukilesh. B Sai Sudharsan, who scored an unbeaten 123 in the Qualifier 1, soon cut a short and wide one straight to backward point to leave Kings in tatters at 51 for 4.
Atheeq Ur Rahman and Ram Arvindh then stitched a 36-run stand in 28 balls. But once that partnership was broken by Suboth Bhati, Kings run-rate took a hit. M Shahrukh Khan, Kings' captain, also had an off day and that culminated in an abject finish to the innings.
The start to Dragons' 130-run chase was a bit frantic, with both the openers being dismissed in 15 balls. But Ashwin and B Indrajith (32 off 35) brought a sense of calmness. Ashwin hit one four and three sixes in his stay. They added a run-a-ball 65 for the third wicket to all but seal the chase. One that was completed swiftly in the end, thanks to Sarath Kumar's 15-ball 27 with two fours and as many sixes.
While Ashwin was named Player of the Match for his innings, Shahrukh took the series honours for his all-round efforts: 225 runs at a strike rate of 182.92 - easily the best among the top run-scorers in TNPL 2024 - and 13 wickets, second to only M Poiyamozhi's 16.

Marizanne Kapp vs Deepti Sharma ends in dramatic tie
London Derby finishes level off the final ball after overseas allrounders trade blows in Lord's thriller
London Spirit 113 for 9 (Deepti 44, Kapp 4-11) tied with Oval Invincibles 113 for 8 (Kapp 47, Deepti 3-18)
Oval Invincibles and London Spirit tied a last-ball thriller in front of a lively crowd of 17,810 at Lord's in the Hundred. An ice-cold Charlie Dean run-out as Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Jo Gardner sought a match-winning two from the final ball denied the visitors what had not long before looked to be a comfortable victory.
Both teams were inspired by exceptional all-round performances from overseas superstars: South Africa's Marizanne Kapp starring for the Invincibles with a 4 for 11 and a quickfire 47, and India's Deepti Sharma taking 3 for 18 after scoring 44 for Spirit.
"It was good up until I got out: it cost us the game so I'm very disappointed," Kapp said. "The plan was to stay in there and take it as deep as possible. We knew they were going to bowl their best bowlers, so I was just trying to knock it around."
Oval Invincibles captain Lauren Winfield-Hill's decision to bowl first was immediately vindicated when Kapp bowled Meg Lanning fourth ball. Cordelia Griffith and Georgia Redmayne responded well, but Kapp then bowled both batters either side of the Powerplay restrictions lifting.
MacDonald-Gay continued the Invincibles' momentum, bowling Dani Gibson before Kapp struck again with the final ball of her spell, cleaning up Heather Knight for her fourth clean-bowled dismissal of the innings.
Deepti led the recovery, striking a well-paced 44 from 34. She was ably supported by Dean and Eva Gray, enabling the Spirit to reach a total of 113 for 9 despite a flurry of late wickets, including two in two from Sophia Smale.
In response, Spirit had both openers out early. Chamari Athapaththu was caught off the bowling of Tara Norris, and Eva Gray had Winfield-Hill stumped thanks to the quick hands of Redmayne, who kept wicket impressively throughout.
Kapp then led the Invincibles' charge, smashing a sweep-heavy 47 from 32. She and Alice Capsey (31 from 19) put on an imposing 55-run partnership before Deepti bowled the latter.
Dean grabbed a stunning catch off the bowling of Deepti soon after to remove Paige Scholfield and the Invincibles chase became trickier as the England offspinner then bowled Mady Villiers, and Sarah Glenn smartly ran Amanda-Jade Wellington out, leaving the visitors six wickets down needing 32 from 32.
Following an assured partnership with Gardner, Kapp was bowled by Deepti with just four runs required from eight. MacDonald-Gay and Gardner were just unable to see their side home as Gibson held her nerve with the ball and Dean found Redmayne with a good throw from the deep to leave MacDonald-Gay well short of her ground looking for the two runs they needed from the final ball.

Sri Lanka bring in Kamindu, Vandersay and bat against unchanged India
Wanindu Hasaranga was out of the series due to a hamstring injury while Mohamed Shiraz was left out of the XI
Toss Sri Lanka chose to bat vs India
Aiming to go one better after tying the first ODI in dramatic circumstances, Sri Lanka chose to bat in the second match of the series. Charith Asalanka, their captain, had no hesitation in making the decision: the pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium is expected to play similarly to the one that hosted Friday's series-opener, and provide increasing help for the spinners as the match progresses.
Sri Lanka made two changes. One was a forced legspinner-for-legspinner swap, with Jeffrey Vandersay replacing Wanindu Hasaranga who is out of the series with a hamstring injury. The other seemed to reflect the conditions Sri Lanka expect, with batting allrounder Kamindu Mendis, who bowls spin, replacing the fast bowler Mohamed Shiraz, who made his debut in the first ODI.
This left Sri Lanka with just the one frontline seamer in Asitha Fernando - they also have the part-time medium-pace of Janith Liyanage if needed - and five spin options including Asalanka, a part-timer who picked up three wickets in the first ODI, including two in two balls to seal the tie.
India named an unchanged XI, with their captain Rohit Sharma stressing on the need for adaptability as he looked ahead to another chase in challenging conditions.
Sri Lanka: 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka (capt), 6 Janith Liyanage, 7 Kamindu Mendis, 8 Dunith Wellalage, 9 Jeffrey Vandersay, 10 Akila Dananjaya, 11 Asitha Fernando.
India: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Arshdeep Singh.

Amy Jones hits 51 then takes six catches to keep Brave winless
Ellyse Perry takes three wickets in six balls as Phoenix win first home game
Birmingham Phoenix 137 for 7 (Jones 51) beat Southern Brave 121 (Wyatt 43, Pavely 3-21, Perry 3-21) by 16 runs
After losing 12 completed games in a row, Birmingham Phoenix, inspired by captain Ellyse Perry, made it two wins from two by squeezing the life out of Southern Brave to win by 16 runs at Edgbaston.
With a hint of rain in the air, Phoenix were put in by Georgia Adams and a steady start was only interrupted when 16-year-old slow-left armer Tilly Corteen-Coleman struck with her first ball to have Sophie Devine lbw. She struck again, Rhianna Southby effecting a smart stumping to get rid of Sterre Kalis, forcing Perry and Amy Jones to consolidate.
They added 23 for the third wicket before Perry holed out to Maia Bouchier at long-on. With the score 55 for 3 at the halfway stage, the Phoenix needed to accelerate and did through Jones, and a cameo of 22 in 12 balls from Emily Arlott that included two sixes.
Jones's half-century saw Phoenix reach 137 for 7, with Lauren Cheatle having conceded just 14 runs from her 20-ball allocation.
After three boundaries from the returning Smriti Mandhana at the start of the Brave innings, it became the Perry show, as the Australia legend picked up three key wickets - Mandhana, Bouchier for a duck, and skipper Adams - in her first ten deliveries.
Danni Wyatt and Freya Kemp steadied the ship, the former striking a typically belligerent 33-ball 43 before Charis Pavely got rid of Kemp and Hannah Baker induced an error from Wyatt.
At 92 for 5 from 69 balls, the momentum was with the Phoenix, and all of their bowlers stuck to their task admirably, throttling the Brave innings as the required run-rate climbed and the visitors simply ran out of steam.
"Emily Arlott's innings was the difference, clearing the fence with ease," Jones said. "And Pez's start was unbelievable. When you have someone like that, who can deliver such performances, it is a huge lift for the team. We were really good in the field and backed up the bowlers."

'I put his batting in my mind' - Wellalage turns to Nissanka for inspiration
He produced an all-round performance, notching up 67 at No.7 and then taking two wickets in a tied game
Dunith Wellalage, all of 21, produced an exemplary all-round performance on a tough pitch at Khettarama. Batting at No. 7, he played Sri Lanka's best innings, hitting 67 not out off 65, in a total of 230 for 8 in the first ODI.
When defending, the left-arm spinner took 2 for 39 off nine overs, taking the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma, who was India's best batter on the evening, and Sri Lanka went on to tie the game.
On the batting front, Wellalage had started watchfully after coming in at 101 for 5 in the 27th over, but on a surface on which no one truly looked set, he seemed the most comfortable batter across both teams, even striking powerful boundaries at the close. For this innings, he took inspiration from a Sri Lanka team-mate, he said.
Pathum Nissanka, who hit another fifty on Friday, has been the hosts' best batter of the tour so far, having also made runs in the T20Is.
"They have a lot of experienced bowlers, so the more we can limit our mistakes, the more we can put pressure on them," Wellalage said of his thinking during his innings. "I was watching Pathum Nissanka bat quite a lot. I put his batting in my mind as I came up with a plan. If you take the pitch, it was one that supported spin bowling. I tried to put as much pressure on the bowler and build partnerships."
With the ball, he perhaps struck the most important blow of the night. Rohit was threatening to make easy work of the target when he galloped to his fifty off 33 balls. But in the 15th over, Wellalage beat him in flight, and struck Rohit in front of the stumps as he attempted a sweep shot, cutting that innings short for 58 off 47.
"I was watching Pathum Nissanka bat quite a lot. I put his batting in my mind as I came up with a plan."
Dunith Wellalage
This is after he'd also dismissed Shubman Gill, again with a nicely flighted delivery that Gill top edged high enough for the keeper to track it down. Wellalage had been the first spinner to be introduced, inside the powerplay.
"We knew that the wicket was spinning. So Charith Asalanka had told me that I would be bowling in the powerplay. I had good support from the wicket too.
"With Rohit at the time, I was trying just to bowl wicket-to-wicket, because I knew how much assistance there was from the pitch."
The middle to late overs, were all Wanindu Hasaranga and Asalanka, said Wellalage. Those two bowlers took three wickets apiece, with Asalanka providing the final touches, taking two wickets in the 48th over when India had already tied the game. Having Axar Patel caught behind was his other wicket.
Earlier, Hasaranga had removed Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Kuldeep Yadav.
"When we bowled, the game changed with the wickets that Wanindu aiya and Charith aiya took. They took wickets at very difficult times, and that's how we were able to at least keep it to this score. If you take Axar Patel and KL Rahul, these are batters who have finished a lot of matches.
"At that time we needed to get the bowlers in, and when Charith aiya got Axar out and Wanindu aiya got KL Rahul out. It was important to stay calm at that stage, and the match turned our way."

Rahul, Shreyas return for India as Sri Lanka bat
Ravaged by injuries to their quicks, Sri Lanka handed a debut to fast bowler Mohammed Shiraz
Toss Sri Lanka chose to bat vs India
Charith Asalanka won the toss in his first match as Sri Lanka's ODI captain and opted to bat first against India in the first ODI at the Khettarama.
Having been ravaged by injury and illness - no less than five of Sri Lanka's fast bowlers are unavailable - the hosts handed an international debut to seamer Mohamed Shiraz. In his most recent List A game, the 29-year-old had bagged career-best figures of 6 for 21.
As for India, they welcomed back both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and picked Shivam Dube ahead of Riyan Parag. KL Rahul, the incumbent ODI wicketkeeper, retained his place in the XI, which means Rishabh Pant will have to wait for his ODI comeback following his life-threatening car crash in December 2022. Shreyas Iyer also retained his middle-order spot in ODIs and will be playing his first international game after losing his central contract.
Washington Sundar, who was the Player of the Series in the T20I series in Zimbabwe and then helped India to a Super-Over victory in Pallekele, was selected as the spin-bowling allrounder along with Axar Patel. Left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav will lead India's three-man spin attack on a dry Colombo pitch.
Sri Lanka also picked three spinners, with Akila Dananjaya getting the nod ahead of Maheesh Theekshana. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dunith Wellalage will round out their spin attack.
Rohit expects the pitch to get "slower and slower" as the game progresses, but didn't mind batting second.

CSK suggest IPL rule change to retain Dhoni as uncapped player
The other franchises were not in favour of bringing back the old rule
Could MS Dhoni be retained as an uncapped player by Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2025? It's an avenue the franchise is exploring by suggesting that the IPL bring back an old rule that was in place for more than a decade.
During the meeting between the IPL and the ten franchises in Mumbai on Wednesday, it is understood that CSK wanted the reintroduction of a rule that had existed since the inaugural edition in 2008 until 2021, when it was believed to have been scrapped at the behest of teams. According to this rule, if a player was retired from international cricket for five or more years, they would be classified as an uncapped player. It is understood that apart from CSK, the majority of the other franchises were not in favour of reintroducing the rule.
Dhoni had announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. Ahead of the following mega auction, before IPL 2022, Dhoni was the second player after Ravindra Jadeja on CSK's list of retentions, at the cost of INR 12 crore from the franchise's auction purse. An uncapped player retained that year cost the team only INR 4 crore.
If the IPL sets similar costs for uncapped players retained ahead of the 2025 auction, it is believed that CSK are keen to retain Dhoni via that route. Several other franchises, however, were not in favour of giving long-retired internationals uncapped status.
Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran is understood to have said that allowing a retired player to be retained as an uncapped player would be "disrespecting" the individual as well as their value, which would be much more at an auction. She said it would set a "wrong precedent" if an uncapped player bought at the auction was getting paid more than the former international retained as an uncapped player. Her suggestion was for the retired player to be part of the auction, where the market would determine their fair price.
A head of another franchise at Wednesday's meeting said several teams apart from CSK were of the opinion that a former international player should not be considered in the uncapped category regardless of how many years he had been retired.
The question of whether Dhoni, 43, will continue to play the IPL is one that has arisen towards the end of the last few seasons. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season and played a limited role with the bat - coming in late in the innings as a boundary-hitter. At an event, Dhoni recently said he and CSK would wait for the player retention rules to be finalised before taking a decision on playing the 2025 season.
Retired India players could be allowed to lower base price
The franchises did unanimously agree that Indian players who had not played international cricket for five years should be allowed to lower their base price at the auction. The suggestion is understood to have come from the IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin, whose view was that a lower base price would give such players a greater chance of getting bought at the auction.
A franchise head said that capped Indians who had not played internationals for several years were being forced to enter the auction at a high base price, and therefore going unsold despite their names coming up for bidding more than once.

Pathirana and Madushanka out of ODIs against India
Sri Lanka "not risking" Pathirana after he jarred his shoulder in the third T20I; uncapped seamer Mohamed Shiraz added to squad
Two further Sri Lanka fast bowlers have been ruled out of the ODIs against India, with Matheesha Pathirana picking up a shoulder complaint, and Dilshan Madushanka injuring a hamstring.
Sri Lanka are also without Dushmantha Chameera, who is out with illness, and Nuwan Thushara, who fractured his thumb. Both these players had missed the T20Is as well.
For now Sri Lanka have brought uncapped right-arm seamer Mohamed Shiraz into the squad, team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. The team will also announce the inclusion of another seamer later on Thursday, he said. Binura Fernando - who, albeit, has not played an ODI since mid-2021 - will not be an option, as he is still recovering from a bout of flu as well.
"Matheesha has jarred his shoulder, and because it is the same issue that he had during the World Cup last year, they have chosen not to risk it," Halangoda said. Pathirana had picked up the injury while fielding in the third T20I in Pallekele, and had left the field soon after, before he had bowled a single delivery in that game.
Madushanka, meanwhile, had sustained the hamstring injury while training, Halangoda said. He had played only one match in the T20I series.
Both Pathirana and Madushanka were likely to be in the XI for the first ODI against India, on Friday. Sri Lanka have lost their last 10 matches across formats against India.

Pat Brown's List A best proves more than enough for Derbyshire
Lancashire scrape into triple-figures but Luis Reece, Brooke Guest make short work of chase
Derbyshire 100 for 1 (Reece 52*, Guest 37*) beat Lancashire 99 (Bell 18, Brown 5-37) by nine wickets
Pat Brown recorded his best one-day figures as Derbyshire thrashed Lancashire by nine wickets in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup match at Derby.
Brown took 5 for 37 in six overs to bowl the visitors out for 99 in 20 overs while Zak Chappell and Harry Moore each claimed two wickets.
The highest score for Lancashire was extras at 19 with only three players, one of them Andrew Flintoff's 16-year-old son Rocky, making double figures.
Derbyshire easily reached their target, ending on 100 for 1 in the 20th over with Luis Reece 52 not out to celebrate a third victory in Group A which boosts their chances of making the knock-out stages while Lancashire suffered a third defeat.
Lancashire had no answer to Derbyshire's pace attack and never recovered from losing three wickets in the first seven overs.
Sam Conners trapped Harry Singh lbw before Chappell struck twice in his fourth over to leave the visitors on 27 for 3.
Josh Bohannon was defeated by one that came back to clip the top of off stump and George Bell was lbw half forward to a full ball for 18.
Flintoff played one dismissive pull to the ropes but was hit on the helmet trying to take on a short ball from Chappell in the ninth over.
Although he was able to continue, he fell to another short delivery as Lancashire lost two wickets in Brown's first over.
Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer marked his debut with two glorious drives for four off Moore but then pulled Brown into the hands of deep mid-wicket.
Given Lancashire's position, it was a poor decision by an international player and Flintoff fell into the same trap when he skied another Brown short ball to reduce his side to 55 for 5.
The procession continued with Chris Green missing a big drive at Moore and Tom Aspinwall caught behind off Brown.who bowled Jack Blatherwick with a full ball in his next over.
After Moore had George Balderson caught behind, Brown bowled Charlie Barnard to complete the rout.
It was now a question of how quickly Derbyshire would wrap up victory and Reece pressed the accelerator with two sixes off Blatherwick in the fourth over.
Reece and Harry Came shared a double century opening stand against Middlesex on Saturday but this time they were parted in the 8th over when Singh took a smart one-handed catch at second slip off Blatherwick to send back Came.
But there was little else for Lancashire to enjoy on a chastening day as Reece and Brooke Guest with an unbeaten 37 added 65 to put the seal on an impressive Derbyshire display.

Washington: I had no idea I had to bowl the Super Over
The allrounder called Suryakumar's leadership skills "amazing" for thinking out of the box
Sri Lanka needed nine to win off the last two overs in the third T20I. India still had the bowling of Mohammed Siraj to call on (Siraj had conceded just 11 off his first three overs). They also had one over from Khaleel Ahmed, who could have bowled the 20th.
But with Kusal Perera still at the crease, captain Suryakumar Yadav went to the offspin of Rinku Singh, which had never before been seen in a T20 international. It worked out brilliantly - Perera first top-edging a cross-batted shot so badly, Rinku himself could get under it. Later in the over, Ramesh Mendis also holed out, to deep midwicket.
Having watched Rinku concede only three runs and claim two wickets in a pressure over, Suryakumar made the decision to bowl his own offspin in the final over, taking two further wickets himself, and conceding only five to win the match.
After the match, Washington Sundar, the frontline offspin bowler in the team described this spell of captaincy as "amazing". The pitch was taking big turn, and Sri Lanka were struggling hugely against the slow bowlers. Suryakumar gambled on two rank part-timers.
"It was amazing from Surya and his leadership skills," Washington said. "I think he felt given the situation if he bowled more spinners we'd have a good chance to win the game. Given the wicket and the situation, he took one or two options, and it did wonders for us.
"There were only 12 balls to go and Kusal Perera was batting. Rinku got him out and Surya himself came on in the last over and almost won the game for us. We all know he has a big heart when he goes out there to bat, but he also has a big heart in leadership as well."
Washington himself then played a key role, bowling a Super Over in which he conceded just two runs, but took two wickets. In regular play he had taken 2 for 23.
"Honestly, I had no idea I was going to bowl. It was after the batsmen walked out that Surya turned behind and said: 'Washy, you're on.' I was very happy, to be honest. When the captain wants you to bowl especially in tough situations, in a Super Over. I thought it was a great opportunity for me to step up and win games for my country. Thank God it went well."
Although India didn't seem capable of defending 137 for the vast majority of the chase, Suryakumar never lost hope, Washington said. Sri Lanka, at one stage, needed 28 runs off 28 balls, with nine wickets in hand. India would then set in motion a huge collapse.
"Surya kept teling us that one or two wickets, and the game would definitely change," Washington said. "In these kinds of wickets, in low-scoring games, even run-a-ball could be a lot of pressure on the batsmen because there's something for the bowlers in the wicket.
"He said one or two wickets in the middle overs would get us in the game, and that's exactly what happened. I hope the audience enjoyed it because you will only see such games every now and then. To be a part of this game feels great."

Asalanka replaces Kusal Mendis as Sri Lanka's ODI captain
Charith Asalanka had been appointed their T20I captain just before the ongoing series against India
Sri Lanka's selectors have appointed Charith Asalanka as the new ODI captain, replacing Kusal Mendis, for the three-match ODI series against India in August. Asalanka had been named T20I captain ahead of the ongoing series against India after Wanindu Hasaranga had resigned from the role following Sri Lanka's early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The same set of selectors had appointed Mendis as the ODI captain in December last year, though he had also led Sri Lanka in several matches in last year's World Cup in an acting capacity.
Though Mendis has been in good touch with the bat, and Sri Lanka won six of the eight completed ODIs under his leadership, the selectors opted to go in a different direction. Under Mendis' captaincy Sri Lanka had won five consecutive home matches against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, but lost 2-1 away to Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three ODIs against India in Colombo on August 2, 4 and 7. They lost the ongoing T20I series after going 2-0 down before the final match in Pallekele on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka squad for ODIs vs India
Charith Asalanka (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, Nishan Madushka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Akila Dananjaya, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Asitha Fernando
