1 day to go đŸ”„

Who would’ve thought ‘Life is life’ and ‘Imbibe the vibe’ would be the mantras that have inspired and continue to inspire the Sports Secretary of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce? Ayush Panchamiya’s story of change from a self-willed middle school boy to one of the most disciplined sportsmen on campus aptly explains why. “My father is my inspiration. It was his decision to send me to boarding school when I was a rebellious teenager, and there are many other important decisions of his that I’m grateful for. It’s his sense, integrity and forethought that still continues to inspire me to this day.”
In spite of being one of the best cricketers in school, Ayush, fondly called Panchu, chose to play football the day his school coach saw him take on 12th graders when he was only in the 6th grade. ”I definitely know I would’ve made it as a cricketer, but football touched my heart, and there has been no turning back.”
Ayush’s approach to his work is similar to his preparation before football games. “Keeping calm under pressure is key for anyone that wants to be the best player on the ground. The awards will come, no doubt about it. But play for the badge, and you will be remembered after the game.”
Speaking about discipline, and not just with regard to sports, Ayush believes it’s what separates the best from just good. “There is no flexibility when it comes to becoming a top sportsman. I have a rigorous routine, and I make sure I stick by it.”
Outside of football, his family, his daily prayer, and his mother’s food are the few things Ayush can’t do without.
The football team plays several tournaments every year, but Spiel stands out as Ayush’s favourite tournament, not just because it takes place at their home ground, but because of the infectiously electric atmosphere. “Nothing feels like Spiel, it’s something I can’t explain. I haven’t asked one person to help me out for the fest, yet students from every corner voluntarily come to help, and I think that shows what Spiel stands for. Spiel is truly an emotion”, signs off our Sports Secretary for the year 2019-2020.

2 days to go 🏏

'Never forget who you are and wear it like an armour'
Cricket has helped him find his identity says the gentleman, playing the gentleman's game.
Vijaya Bhargav, fondly called Otte, was inspired by his grand father, and the 2007 World Cup final, to pick up his first bat at the age of 9. He is now a wicket keeper and a batsman. He has nothing but gratitude for the sport and owes everything he's become to it. Otte says that a sportsman's connection with the game goes beyond the pitch and reflects in his personality.
His idols include Adam Gilchrist and our very own, MS Dhoni. He fondly recalls a district level DDPI match he played at the age of 15, where under the pressure of keeping up with the net run rate, he hit his very first 6.
Otte's had his share of injuries, the worst of it being a tennis elbow. This was a true test for his body and his willpower. Despite doctors saying he wouldn’t be able to play for 2 years, he bounced back in 6 months. He credits his selfless and hardworking nature to his family, to whom he is forever grateful.
Otte believes that every player is important, and that no role is too small in the game. His ideology is simple, every player should be a family man, selflessly providing without expectations and rising to every occasion. When he isn’t able to contribute on the field, Otte becomes the link between the coach and the players.
'Success doesn't last and failure is not fatal. People are remembered for what they create rather than what they achieve.’ This thought has always motivated him to work for the badge rather than the name at the back. Like a true sportsman, he isn't scared of failure, but embraces it as it comes. He takes it as a lesson to improve himself as a sportman and as an individual.
Spiel is a special time not only for those playing, but for everyone since it brings out many varied emotions. Working for Spiel has shown Otte the importance of systematic planning, discipline and smart work. For him, the best part about Spiel is the people, and he cannot wait to share that one of a kind experience with his fellow Josephites.
