Advanced Training in Plant Breeding (ATPBR), in collaboration with the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Nigeria, organized an international conference featuring two major events: the Global Okra Round Table II (GORT II), held on October 2-3, 2024, and the 5F Farming Conference: Breeding for Resilience, held on October 4, 2024, in Nigeria, West Africa.
During this event, we launched the book titled "Okra: Status, Challenges, and Opportunities," a comprehensive compilation of all papers presented during the first Global Okra Round Table, held in Delhi from October 10-12, 2022.
This edited volume covers a wide range of topics related to okra and its global significance. It includes detailed information on the general characteristics and classification of the crop, as well as key areas influencing crop improvement such as the latest trends in breeding, genomics, molecular marker development, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, nutritional quality, seed production, and the export and market expansion of okra.
Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) is a vital vegetable crop grown across tropical and subtropical regions. Over the past five years, it has gained increasing recognition as a global crop, thanks to its high nutritional value. The global demand for okra seed is projected to reach 6,000 metric tons by 2030, making it a $300 million industry in the near future.
This book, produced under the aegis of ATPBR, provides extensive knowledge on crop improvement, agronomy, seed production, and the global market status of okra. It is designed to serve breeders, pathologists, biotechnologists, seed production specialists, market managers, graduate and post-graduate students, and other stakeholders in both the public and private sectors involved in okra crop improvement or market development.
It also serves as an invaluable resource for crop scientists and students working on okra, fostering ideas for public-private collaborative research to drive future innovation in this important crop.
