We had 2 (+1 ) very special guest in this morning for Story Time - Deirdre & Martina ( and their Bear )very kindly took the time to read to us this morning.... Pages were turned and imaginations were in over drive !

Importance of Reading & Wicklow County Council Library Service

Reading to small children and visiting libraries is crucial for cognitive development, vocabulary growth, and building lasting emotional bonds. Daily reading enhances literacy skills, focus, and creativity, while libraries provide free, accessible resources, community connection, and specialized programming to foster a lifelong love of learning.

If you were told that you could improve your child’s imagination, thinking ability, vocabulary, oral language, literacy skills, interpersonal relationships, empathy, attachment, and have great fun at the same time, you would rush to sign up for such an amazing programme. Imagine if you were told that you can do it yourself and it’s free? So, ‘what is this magic and where can I get some?’, you would ask.

Reading aloud to babies and young children will do all the above and more, and if you have access to a library, it can be completely free.

With warmer days ahead, outdoor play is something many children and parents are looking forward to! Outdoor play is also a wonderful way to incorporate movement and exercise into your child’s day, while providing opportunities for them to learn in a number of different ways.

Whether at school or at home, playing outside provides unstructured playtime which gives children a break during what are normally predictable and structured hours during their day. It also gives them free time to explore and learn in new ways.

Peer to peer interaction: During unstructured outdoor play, children have the freedom to engage with their peers and understand how to interact with one another. It also allows children to develop and express their individual personalities. Some children like being the leader, while others prefer to go along with the group and some enjoy playing on their own. Yet other children enjoy doing all three. Outdoor play lets children establish relationships with their peers in the way they feel most comfortable.

Language Skills: By freely interacting with peers, children have the opportunity to speak to one another, have conversations and continue improving their language skills.

Gross Motor Skills: Outdoor play allows children to work on their whole body movement. This includes actions like alternating their feet to walk up and down the stairs, bouncing, climbing and jumping. Spatial awareness is also a skill that outdoor play helps to make children aware of. This includes a child’s ability to navigate through equipment, learning to avoid bumping into objects and being mindful of looking ahead rather than behind them when walking. These are skills a child will benefit from on a daily basis, but need to be practiced!

Our very own Keith Armstrong

A really important step forward for inclusive rowing here in Bray 👏

The club as well as other water sport clubs in the area will be gaining new accessibility equipment at Bray Harbour — including a beach wheelchair and portable hoist — will make it far easier for people with disabilities to access the water and get into boats safely.

For members of Bray Rowing Club like Keith, getting into a boat has often meant being manually lifted — something that isn’t always safe, practical, or independent. This new equipment directly addresses that barrier and will make a huge difference to day-to-day training and participation.

Massive credit to Councillor Caroline Winstanley whose efforts and advocacy have helped drive this forward and bring about real, meaningful change for the club and wider harbour community.

The equipment will be shared across all Bray Harbour clubs, opening up opportunities not just in rowing, but across multiple water sports.

This is exactly the kind of progress that makes our sport stronger — more accessible, more inclusive, and open to everyone.
