CONGRATULATIONS to our school teams who have qualified for the Irish National Final of the University to Schools contest with EU-CONEXUS and South East Technological University ! 💚 🌲 🌊 🐟

🏞️ Team 1: 'The Octonauts' from St Marys CBS Carlow https://www.cbscarlow.ie/ are set on solving the problem of plastic waste in their labs and have been prototyping some very practical innovations.

🐛 Team 2: 'The Worm Academy' from Coláiste Iósaef https://www.cik.ie/ explored their local coastline and created a simple and very effective solution nurturing ecosystems to address erosion.

🚮 Team 3: St Marys Academy CBS, Carlow also brought a rubbish drive to the next level. 'The Bin Men' got their 3rd and 4th year students involved in a community-wide initiative highlighting the extent of waste generated and used art to emphasise the importance of re-using and re-manufacturing.

🌲 Team 4: 'The Green Team' from Ardscoil na Mara Tramore Co Waterford http://ardscoilnamara.ie/ have a very special community innovation which tackles mental health, social inclusion and environmental sustainability in very practical ways.

🖨️ Team 5: Using the 9 R framework, budding Chemical Engineers from 'Legacy Technology' in St Marys Academy CBS, Carlow have created a 21st century solution for the 21st century challenge of 3D printing waste.

Best of luck to all challengers. This years contest attracted a very high standard of invention and innovation. Calmast are delighted to support schools to participate in this 5th edition contest. The National Final winners will go on to represent Ireland and in the online International Final on April 10th in u Zadru University of Zadar

🌟 Celebrating the Magic of Science at the Kilkenny Science Festival 2024! 🌟

From 9th to 16th November, the Kilkenny Science Festival delivered a Science Week Ireland packed with creativity, discovery, and imagination.

With almost 70 events across the county—from the adventurous Castlecomer Discovery Park to the historic Saint Canice's Cathedral and Round Tower —this year’s festival was a vibrant celebration of curiosity and learning.

Highlights included:
🧪 Creative Experiences: From bookmaking to bubbling, balancing to comedy, and even dancing, dinosaur-ing, and engineering—science was brought to life in ways that thrilled and inspired!

♻️ Sustainability in Action: Activities like recycling, redesigning, and repairing encouraged attendees to think critically about the world around them.

⚔️ We channelled Vikings and explored ancient science practices, and blended history and STEM to spark imaginations, young and old.

We connected with old friends and engaged with new groups, all in the spirit of inspiring a love of science and encouraging curiosity.

A huge thank you to all the participants, partners, funders, volunteers, and audiences who helped make Kilkenny Science Festival 2024 an unforgettable celebration of . Your enthusiasm and support fuel the magic of Kilkenny Science Festival.

Super morning at the Clothes Repairs and Regeneration workshop with Oren Byrne in Castlecomer. This was a busy 2-hour hands-on workshop focused on regenerating your wardrobe where participants learned practical sewing techniques and how to breathe new life into their clothes by shortening trousers or skirts, reinforcing a worn hem, fixing a rip in a seam, or replacing elastic in a waistband. Discover the essential skills to maintain and regenerate your favourite pieces using a sewing machine for professional-quality repairs.

Members of the public are invited to bring along some of their unwanted clothes or household textiles for a free Kilkenny Science Festival event running in the new Mayfair Library, on Wednesday, November 13 from 10.30am.
