An unusual coincidence of shutting gates has benchmarked memorable moments in Sean Dorris' near 40-year career working with An Garda Síochána. Sean retired from the job last month.

All at the Redhills Carnival on the Green extend our very best wishes to our Chairman, Sean Doris, who retires tomorrow, Tuesday, from An Garda Síochána after almost 35 years of loyal and unbroken service to our community.

Sean has, throughout his distinguished career, always played a very important role within our community, both in his capacity as the local Garda and indeed in his own private capacity as a community member. His energy and commitment to our carnival has always been exceptional and indeed his commitment to Redhills and the surrounding areas has been second to none. The nature of his work has led him to have helped many people down through the years, the extent of which will never truly be known. His own stamp on the community will be long lasting and indeed it will be a strange new time for us all, with few not knowing Sean not being a member of An Garda Síochána.

Tomorrow, when Sean hangs up his hat for the last time, he will do so with the appreciation and thanks of a grateful community and we look forward to Sean having even more time to commit to our Carnival!

In normal circumstances, today we would be reflecting on what would have been another Carnival weekend. The dance floor would have been full, our village green bustling to the sound of music, laughter and the giddy voices of children playing. Old friends would have reunited and expats from our village would have rekindled of old, recalling stories from days past and memories from another time. But of course this is not a normal year and this is not normal circumstances.

We are fortunate that although the Carnival plays a massive role within our community, it is not a matter of life and death. We give thanks to those within our community working to combat this virus and we send our very best wishes to those from within our village, those who have left and those who make the annual journey to join us in Redhills on the second weekend of August.

Without doubt, the sweet sound of music will be heard on our green again, more memories will be made, stories told and laughter had, but until then let us all hold firm in the hope of better days to come 🌈 🌈

In light of the publishment of recent Government and HSÉ advice, the Redhills Carnival on the Green committee have come to the very difficult decision that the Carnival, which was due to take place from Thursday 6th-Sunday 9th August 2020, has had to be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency.

This decision was not made lightly but we are conscious that in order to protect all of our patrons, our volunteers, visitors and indeed the wider Redhills community, we couldn’t host an event where over 2,000 people would visit our village across the weekend.

The very nature of our event meant that it would be impossible to apply all appropriate social distancing measures.

We would like to put on record our sincere and genuine thanks to you ALL who worked so hard to ensure the success of our Carnival, not only over the past number of years but also this year, where a massive amount of preparatory work has taken place.

We are also aware of the boost in which the Carnival gives to our local community, both financially and socially so rest assured that this is not goodbye but see you soon and we will be back bigger and better in 2021.

Redhills Carnival on the Green 2019.

What a wonderful weekend!🥳

Thank you all so so much for the incredible support which our community event receives, if it wasn’t for you all, we wouldn’t have a Carnival!

And such support we received too, with our numbers up right across the board!!!

Over 2,000 people joined us on the Green to enjoy this wonderful event!

Thank you to our committee for all the hard hard work and effort which they put into the Carnival! It was an enjoyable weekend but it took many months to plan and put into place!

Thank you also to our benefitting organizations for all their help!

Plans are already afoot for next year, but for now normality must resume 🌈!
