Meet Carla González, the contemporary dancer bringing Lucia Joyce to life in New Ross.

Originally from Seville, Carla studied performing arts and choreography at the María de Ávila Superior Dance School in Madrid. Her journey has since taken her across Europe, performing with dance companies and in opera productions in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Alongside her dance career, Carla earned a degree in Psychology and is currently completing her master’s degree a fascinating combination for an artist exploring the inner world of Lucia Joyce through movement.

Now a member of Karlik Danza Teatro, Carla comes to New Ross for the Irish premiere of Lucia Joyce, a Small Drama in Motion. Blending contemporary dance, theatre and audiovisual storytelling, the production places Lucia’s artistry, imagination and creative voice at the centre of her own story.

Wexford’s theatre talent is crossing the Atlantic once again, with a local festival continuing to give the county’s playwrights a platform at home — and an opportunity to see their work reach American audiences.

The Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre has long championed Wexford voices, having previously showcased writers including Eoin Colfer and Billy Roche. Now the festival is taking that commitment a step further, with contemporary Wexford plays travelling to California as part of an enduring theatrical exchange between the two sides of the Atlantic.

This year, Wexford playwright Jack Matthews will open the festival with The Unkillable Irishman at St Michael’s Theatre, while Sheila Forsey’s Teddy, first premiered at the festival, is preparing for its US premiere in California this September through the festival’s partnership with the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House.

From 14–18 October, New Ross will welcome artists from Ireland, the United States, Georgia and Spain for the 2026 Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre.

Wednesday, 14 October
The Unkillable Irishman
A fast-moving, darkly funny and heartfelt play by Wexford writer Jack Matthews, based on the unbelievable true story of Donegal emigrant Mike Malloy.

Thursday, 15 October
Long Day’s Journey Into Night
The acclaimed Tumanishvili Theatre Company brings its powerful Georgian interpretation of O’Neill’s masterpiece to Ireland for the first time. Performed in Georgian with English subtitles.

Friday, 16 October
Lucia Joyce, a Small Drama in Motion
An evocative dance-theatre production from Spain combining contemporary dance, theatre and audiovisual storytelling. Irish premiere.

Saturday, 17 October
Festival Music Evening
The musical traditions of Ireland, Spain and Georgia meet on one stage, led by acclaimed Irish musicians Zoë Conway and John McIntyre.

Sunday, 18 October
Ah, Wilderness!
Artists from the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House, present O’Neill’s warm-hearted coming-of-age comedy—a delightful contrast to the family dramas for which he is best known.

In America, Dr Richard Hayes says O’Neill is regarded as “the Shakespeare of American theatre”—a towering literary figure and the only American playwright to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Yet his roots lead directly back to New Ross. His father, James O’Neill, was born locally and emigrated to America in 1851. Although Long Day’s Journey Into Night is set in the United States, its themes of family, drink, dysfunction and inherited pain have led some to call it “the greatest Irish play.”

Join Dr Richard Hayes and Kieran Cronin of South East Technological University as they explore O’Neill’s connections to New Ross and ask how his Irish heritage and his family’s emigrant experience shaped his writing.

This October, New Ross becomes an international meeting place for artists, stories and cultures. The 2026 Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre will welcome companies and performers from Ireland, the United States, Georgia and Spain for five remarkable days of theatre, dance and music.

This year is particularly special. Theatre companies from Georgia and Spain approached the festival with a desire to bring their work to New Ross—a wonderful sign of the festival’s growing international reputation.

Audiences will experience O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night through Georgian eyes, discover Lucia Joyce’s story through Spanish dance-theatre, enjoy O’Neill’s only comedy with visiting American artists, and celebrate the musical traditions of Ireland, Spain and Georgia. Alongside this international programme, new Wexford writing will take its place on the same stage through Jack Matthews’ exciting The Unkillable Irishman.

It is everything the festival was created to encourage: cultural exchange, artistic collaboration and the strengthening of connections between New Ross and the wider world.

What turns the people who should love one another into enemies—and a family home into a prison?

Over the course of one turbulent day, the Tyrone family’s love, regret, addiction and long-held resentments rise to the surface in Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece, Long Day’s Journey Into Night.
O’Neill reveals both the worst and the best of humanity. His characters hurt one another, yet he never asks us to judge them.

We recognise their failings because, in some way, we recognise ourselves.

The Tumanishvili Theatre Company’s Georgian production brings a fresh visual and cultural perspective to this deeply personal play.

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Murphy of Carrig-on-Bannow, who, together with his brother Pip, was honoured at last year’s Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre for their remarkable contribution to the traditional musical heritage of the area.

John was a great musician who gave so much enjoyment and created a thriving environment for musicians and music lovers to gather and celebrate the joy of music and community.

We are very grateful that we had the opportunity to celebrate John and acknowledge all that he gave to music and his community last year.

Our deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and the many musicians whose lives he touched. He will be sadly missed.

Director Dmitry Troyanovsky believes that one of the most powerful ways to understand our own heritage is to encounter it from another culture’s point of view.

In his striking production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, the acclaimed Tumanishvili Theatre Company brings O’Neill’s deeply personal family drama into a world that feels immediate and contemporary.

At the heart of Dmitry’s interpretation is one haunting question:

What turns the people who should love and support one another into enemies and a family home into a prison?

The production combines intimate, psychologically nuanced acting with a strong visual and physical language. Performed in Georgian with English subtitles, it offers Irish audiences a rare opportunity to see one of O’Neill’s greatest plays afresh while experiencing Georgia’s rich theatrical tradition.
