Festival of Dracula

Festival of Dracula The Dracula Origin Story of Bram Stoker, Lucy Westenra and the Town of Monaghan. Was our quaint little town the inspiration behind it all?

Check out the programme of Halloween events happening all over Monaghan Town this spooky season. Did you know that the story of Dracula was said to be very much influenced by Bram Stoker's time spent in the town of Monaghan? Stoker visited Monaghan courthouse as a court clerk of Petty Sessions, and the courthouse is situated next to St. Patrick's Church in the Diamond at the heart of Monaghan Town

. The church houses a relief sculpture which depicts Warner William Westenra (Lord Rossmore) saying goodbye to his wife Mary Anne on her deathbed. Stoker was said to have been inspired to write his 1897 novel by this emotive piece of art and if you see it, you'll understand why. We here in Monaghan embrace this literary connection and wish to celebrate all things Dracula. Check out our events page to see all the Halloween shenanigans we have going on this spooky season.
