Transition Longford is a community movement, connected to the International Transition Movement of Communities coming together to reimagine and rebuild our world. We host a calendar of events/workshops and gatherings throughout the year as well as an annual TRANSITION Weekend event. Established in 2019 our aim is to facilitate spaces for people to gather, connect and chat about their shared skills

, knowledge and stories. Our hope is that offering such spaces will aid us in developing more creative, inclusive neighbourhood communities, transition to a healthier, kinder, more compassionate and ethical way of living in the world, and equip ourselves with the knowledge necessary to meet the challenges of the future. Overall, If you have ideas to share, or want to work together on sustainable living or restoration projects such as zero waste and up-cycling, community gardens and food growing, tree and orchard planting, starting a repair café, skills sharing, community energy, developing co housing or eco-villages and other such initiatives then come along and meet like minded people who have already done so, or are currently in the development process. Perhaps you are growing your own food, have a local food growing group, are part of a mens shed, a member of community energy group, a climate action group, a mental health support group, a womens group, an animal rights group, a tidy towns group, a zero waste group, a recycling or up cycling group or an ethical or sustainable business looking to connect with other like minded people. Come join us - Everyone is welcome. We'd love to hear from any kind of group whose work ties into the vision of Transition Longford which is of resilient, creative, inclusive communities where everyone is valued and every voice matters. What is Transition ?

If you are concerned about the climate crisis, have ideas or are interested in working together on sustainable projects relating to zero waste and upcycling, community energy projects, local currencies, community garden and food growing projects, tree and orchard planting, starting a repair café, skills sharing, developing co housing or eco-villages and other such initiatives then we would love to have you on the Transition Longford Team !

TRANSITION is a grassroots, global movement and an ongoing social experiment bringing communities together to re-imagine and rebuild our world. It was initially founded in Kinsale in 2005 by British environmental activist and writer 'Rob Hopkins' in collaboration with one of his students Louise Rooney. The project began as the Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan but was then further developed into the Transition Towns concept by Louise. It was historically adopted by Kinsale Town Council in 2005.

Rob Hopkins went on to establish the second Transition Town in Totnes, England which has since become an inspiring focal point of the movement.

Transition is now an internationally recognised network of towns and villages focusing on and working toward developing more sustainable/resilient, regenerative communities.

Some of the principles which guide the work of a Transition Town Team are promoting inclusivity and social justice, respecting resource limits and creating resilience, paying attention to balance, freely sharing ideas and power, collaborating and looking for synergies, fostering positive visioning and creativity.

Doing Transition successfully requires a team of people, of all ages, with all kinds of skills and knowledge. Everything you know matters and can make a difference to the community you live in so it’s important to share what you know or just share ideas and see who knows how to implement them. It doesn’t matter if you’re a member of another group, this whole concept is based on collaboration, the sharing of resources, skills, knowledge and power.

TRANSITION is in its infancy here in Longford but we aim to raise important questions and discussions around how we transition to a healthier, regenerative, more compassionate and ethical way of living in the world and equip ourselves with the knowledge necessary to meet the challenges of an uncertain future.
