Viola (1908), is a popular returning entrant, having celebrated her 100th birthday at the event in 2008. The crew always brings a real passion as keepers and guardians of Viola's heritage.

Viola became a French historical monument in 1993 and is berthed in La Rochelle where she continues to regularly compete at classic regattas on the Atlantic coasts.

We look forward to warmly welcoming her back to the Clyde this year.

This years Classic boat awards are now announced and voting is open to all. We would like to encourage everyone to vote for the the Dublin Bay 21 fleet that are up for this years awards in the New Sailing vessel category.

Hal Sisk is one of the main movers on the rebuild of this fleet and he has been a great supporter of the club and the classic regatta at Glandore. Hal spoke about the project the last time we had the Classic Boat summer school in 2019, so we encourage as many as we can to vote for these beautiful boats to win the award and you’d never know we could encourage him to bring them to sail in Glandore in 2023.

For more info on the fleet read this article from afloat https://afloat.ie/sail/sailing-classes/dublin-bay-21

A true Classic returns home to Glandore Harbour after extensive restoration.

Gypsy, the International Dragon that Don Street has raced for 33 years, is an Anker and Jensen, built in 1933. At 86 she is the oldest Dragon in the world still regularly racing. The restoration was done by Diii, Don’s son.
Here is Gypsy prepared to leave Kingston's Yard in Kinsale. The journey was only possible due to the assistance of the Garda organised by Tim Forde, GHYC Vice Commodore. A Garda es**rt was given to Gypsy from Kinsale to Glandore. Special thanks to Superintendant Gerard O'Mahony, for facilitating it and to Sgt Michael Golden who accompanied Tim in the Garda es**rt. Thanks also to Diarmaid O'Suilleabhain who trailered Gypsy home and Cyril Hayes who transferred Gypsy onto Kieran ODonaghue’s trailer when it arrived in Glandore. John Wyles kindly lent his Harbeck trailer for the journey.
It was a complete surprise for Don as he was unaware of the exercise organised by Eamon Timoney, GHYC Commodore. Don and Kevin were working on his wooden dinghy when he saw a dragon go by the road and was heard to say " I wonder whose dragon is that that has just arrived?"
A very happy Don is pictured getting Gypsy ready for the planned lift-in on 6 June.

Its postponement is another of the long list of sailing event casualties due to the current health pandemic.

01/04/2020

A Covid-19 meeting of the committee was convened on Monday, March 30th by teleconference to review GHYC measures and update members and course accordingly.

The committee is very mindful of our responsibility to safeguard the health and well-being of our staff, members and general public. The committee will follow the requirements and guidance of the Government, HSE and the Irish Sailing Association of which we are a member.

At present, there is no certainty on how long particular measures and guidance will remain in place or to what new measures may be required and over what timeframe. With that in mind, the strategy of the committee is to continue planning for our various courses, events and sailing taking place until such time as a cancellation or postponement is required. The committee will endeavour to do this in a timely way so that our members can act and plan accordingly.

GHYC is fully committed to the existing Classic 2020 schedule of events and is continuing to plan for them. A decision on cancellation/postponement will be made in the first week of May.

Stay safe and well and if the committee can be of assistance to any member in these difficult times, please contact us and we will try and assist if we can.

JPF 2020 Glandore Classic Regatta

Covid-19: Message from Glandore Harbour Yacht Club

The GHYC committee is very mindful of our responsibility to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our staff, members, guests and general public. We will follow the requirements and guidance of the Government, HSE and the Irish Sailing Authority of which we are a member.

Irish Sailing advises that all organised sailing activity should cease with immediate effect and will be reviewed on 29th March.

The ISA will continue to monitor Government announcements and update their advice accordingly.

At present there is no certainty on how long particular measures and guidance will remain in place or to what new measures may be required and over what time frame. With that in mind our strategy is to plan for our various courses, sailing, and events, including the JPF 2020 Glandore Classic Regatta until such time as a cancellation or postponement is required. The committee will endeavour to do this in a timely way so that our members and guests can act and plan accordingly.

Regatta entry Fees: If the club has to cancel a course/event then a 100% refund will be made to the course applicant. If an applicant cancels a course/event then the club makes a 75% refund under the Club’s Terms and Conditions.

We would ask those who had intended to enter the Classic Regatta to continue to do so in the normal way, this enables the club to plan the event and support it appropriately.

We want to reassure you that we will continue to closely monitor the situation and to review the plans for these events in line with updated health advice and guidance.

We will at all times act in the best interests of public health and safety in an effort to play our part in the global efforts to contain the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid19).

Stay healthy and look after your loved ones and yourself!
