Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend Festival - Finuge Festival honouring the balladeer Sean McCarthy which takes place in Finuge, Co. Kerry every August Bank Holiday Weekend He was one of a family of ten children.

Sean was born in Listowel on July 5th, 1923. He attended Listowel Primary School, where his teacher for a time was Dr. Bryan McMahon, who once said of Sean that "he was always a special person, I'll even go so far as to say he was unique." Among his best known songs are "Shanagolden", "Red Haired Mary", "Highland Paddy", "Murphy's Volunteers",, "Step it out Mary", "Mountain Tae, (Hills of Connemara) and "In Shame Love, In shame". Over the years Sean entertained and delighted thousands of listeners to "Sunday Miscellany" and "Thought for the Day" on RTE Radio. He played a major role in promoting "The Rambling House" on Radio Kerry, which is now continued at Sheahan's Thatched House, Finuge over the winter months. The Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend provides a fitting tribute to an individual who will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity.

☕ Coffee Morning for Kerry Hospice Foundation ☕️

Join us on Saturday, 19th September, from 11am to 2pm at Sheehan’s Thatched Cottage, Finuge, for a special Coffee Morning in support of Kerry Hospice.

Come along for a cuppa, a chat and a bit of community spirit — and, most importantly, help us raise vital funds for Kerry Hospice Founand the wonderful care and support they provide to families across Kerry.

As the evenings begin to draw in, it’s time to come together again for our monthly Finuge Rambling House at Sheehan’s Thatched Cottage.

🎶 An evening of music, songs, stories, local talent and good company, bringing the community together in the spirit of the traditional Rambling House.

As another Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend comes to a close, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this year's festival such a wonderful celebration of music, song, storytelling and community. 💚

The weekend began in style with a superb opening night concert by Elle Marie O Dwyer Music followed by a memorable programme of events including the historic Teac Mallon Meigh Twinning Ceremony with Sheehan’s Thatched Cottage outstanding Ballad and Storytelling Competitions , and a fitting finale with the Peggie O'Connell Memorial Rambling House on Monday afternoon.

Congratulations to Sheila O'Sullivan, winner of the 2026 Sean McCarthy Ballad Competition and to Marie Gillen, winner of the Mick McCarthy Storytelling Competition.

Congratulations also to every finalist who took to the stage throughout the weekend and all who entered both the Ballad and Storytelling Competitions. The standard of talent was exceptional and a credit to all involved.

Our sincere thanks to our performers, musicians, storytellers, competitors, adjudicators, MCs, sponsors, and everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your dedication, generosity and enthusiasm continue to make this festival possible.

A special word of thanks to Teach Siamsa Finuge for once again providing such a welcoming home for our festival events, and to McCarthys Bar Finuge where the music and entertainment continued late into the night, adding to the wonderful atmosphere and enjoyment of the festival weekend.

Finally, thank you to everyone who travelled to Finuge and supported the festival. Your presence, encouragement and continued support ensure that the songs, stories and legacy of Sean McCarthy continue to thrive for generations to come.
