The alpine element of the strange Burren plant community, the spring gentian which at the moment flowers alongside the Mediterranean (early purple orchid) and arctic (mountain avens) representatives.

Early morning light at Kilrush Wood earlier this week. This is one of the very few woodlands in West Clare and was planted as part of the Vandeleur Estate around 100 years ago. It's by no means a native or old woodland but still supports a variety of plants and animals, unfortunately including some invasive species like three-cornered garlic and the infamous rhododendron.

Ferns are emerging as well in the Old Glen. The hart's tongue fern is, unlike most other ferns, an evergreen and never dies away completely. Some - mostly battered - leaves remain throughout the winter and new leaves are grown in spring.

I often wonder how much worse the state of Ireland's nature would be without the proactive and voluntary work of community groups. The Seafield Conservation Forum is only one of many such groups and they have been working to restore the dune system at Seafield for a while. The latest addition to to the area is a "sand fence" which helps sand accumulation and so the formation of new dunes.

A change of season. The last of previous autumn's hazel nuts disappearing into the moss, surrounded by decaying wood and leaves, and in the middle of it the fresh growth and flowers of a barren strawberry. It's spring in the Burren.

The barren strawberry is an intriguing little plant. It's very similar to the wild strawberry, but flowers earlier and has distinctive gaps between the white petals. The biggest difference, however, becomes evident in late summer. Unlike the wild strawberry the barren strawberry produces small, hard and rather inedible berries.
