Can a university be Ireland’s youngest but also one of the oldest educational institutions? Yes 😉

The Royal College of St. Patrick, also known as St. Patrick’s College Maynooth, was founded in 1795 and was the largest seminary in the world by 1850.

In 1871, Maynooth College became independent and in 1910 it became a Recognised College of the National University of Ireland (NUI).

It was only in 1996 that the college became an open centre of university education, expanding beyond clerical studies

A year later, it was restructured by the Universities Act and the college at Maynooth was formally established as an autonomous university, becoming “National University of Ireland, Maynooth”, or Maynooth University, independent of St. Patrick’s College Maynooth.

And that is why Maynooth University is Ireland’s youngest university and one of the oldest educational institutions!

Believed to be born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.

He was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He eventually escaped and returned around 432 CE to convert the Irish to Christianity.

By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17.

Many legends grew up around him; that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts.

King Henry VII declared Cork a Rebel County after the events that took place in 1491.

After Perkin Warbeck, a young Flemish man who was proclaimed to be one of the Princes in the Tower, arrived in Cork he tried to recruit support as to overthrow King Henry VII.

The Corkonians supported Warbeck then, including several important citizens and the mayor of Cork. Their rebellion and effort to reclaim the throne for the Yorkists did not succeed, and they were captured and executed when in England alongside Warbeck.

And that is the origin of Cork’s nickname of the “Rebel County”, and Cork city’s of the “Rebel City”.
