We are delighted to announce that acclaimed writer/director Shane Meadows will join us as a special guest at this year’s festival.
To mark the 20th anniversary of This Is England, BVIFF will host a gala screening of the film followed by an exclusive In Conversation event with Meadows alongside acclaimed Irish actor (and BVIFF patron) Helen Behan, who starred in This Is England ’88, This Is England ’90 and The Virtues.
A landmark of modern British cinema, This Is England is a powerful, funny and deeply human coming-of-age story set against skinhead culture and the political tensions of 1983. Meadows, whose work includes Dead Man’s Shoes, A Room for Romeo Brass and the acclaimed This Is England TV sequels, brings his trademark mix of realism, tenderness and humour to a film that won Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs and Best British Independent Film at the BIFAs, with Thomas Turgoose winning Most Promising Newcomer.
BAFTA-winning director, writer and producer Shane Meadows’ credits include This Is England, Smalltime, Twenty Four Seven, Dead Man’s Shoes, Somers Town and The Gallows Pole. He also directed the documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone and music videos for Liam Gallagher and Jake Bugg.
To mark this special event, the festival will rename its short film bursary The Shane Meadows Short Film Bursary for 2026. Meadows will attend throughout the festival and host a masterclass and panel discussion, with further details to be announced soon.
