Máire Ní Bhraoináin or Moya Brennan as she was known professionaly has passed away at the age of 73. Starting out as part of the family band Clannad in the straight traditional/folk music genre she went on to have international success. Clannad rode the wave of highly produced hits in amanufactured "Celtic Music" genre.

At the heart of it always was Máire's harp playing and that ethereal voice. Here she is on the Late Late Show in 1990 doing what she does best - singing in her native Donegal Irish with her glorious voice unadorned. The song starts at 1:11

Moya Brennan (Máire Ní Bhraonáin) sings a traditional Irish song called ‘An Maighdean Mhara’ about a mermaid who returns to the sea, having left her human hu...

The great voice of Dolores Keane was one we had long wanted to feature at the festival but alas it is not to be. Her earthy tones and simple unadorned style were perhaps the hallmarks of a voice so widely loved and admired by all who heard her.

Whatever she sang she made it her own, with her unassuming, guileless style, her own accent and instinctive musicality. We loved her and we hope she knew that.

Dolores Keane sings The Shores of Lough Bran in Cavan Town Hall in June 1987.

Tá laoch ar lár. Tá ar gcara Seán Ó Sé imithe ar shlí na firinne.

We are very sad this morning at the news of the passing of one of the great Irish voices of the past century and one of the most renowned Cork men - the incomparable Seán Ó Sé.

It was only natural that as we set out to celebrate the art of singing that we would immediately think of Seán. He performed at our first festival in 2017 alongside Cór Chúil Aodha and judged the singing competition in 2017 and again in 2022. We were honoured by his involvement in the festival and for the enthusiasm he showed. He was the consummate professional and an entertainer to his fingertips.

The purity of the voice, the clarity of the diction, the way he inhabited a song and his showmanship made him unique. At his last appearance with us in 2022 he sang the blend of "Do Bhí Bean Uasal" and "Carrickfergus" with which he was so associated. His top notes were still so clear and his vigour undimmed that he brought the house down.

Our sympathies to his children and wider family. Leaba i measc na naomh leat a Shéain. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
