179 feet above Cork city, there is a golden salmon. Eleven feet three inches long, gilded in gold leaf, turning in the wind since the late 1750s. Most people know it without knowing much about it. It is just there, the way Shandon is just there, part of the skyline, part of the city.

The fish is an ancient Christian symbol. It is also an ancient Irish symbol, and a symbol of Cork. There was a salmon fishery on the River Lee for centuries, run by the Franciscan Order. Putting a golden salmon on top of the new church tower was not a modest gesture. The McOstrich family, wealthy Cork merchants who were heavily involved in the planning and funding of St Anne's, knew exactly what they were doing. We're here, it said. And there it still is.

It has had its adventures. When it was taken down for repair in 2002, workmen found bullet holes in it, almost certainly target practice from the soldiers in Collins Barracks in the 1920s. The holes were filled with Isopon and the fish went back up. It survived Hurricane Ophelia in 2017 without damage. It is re-gilded roughly every twenty years to keep its gleam.

We Only Want the Earth: The Life and Ideas of James Connolly, will be shown on RTE 1, tonight Wednesday, August 26th at 9:35 pm.

This documentary shown at the Spirit of Mother Jones Festival 2025, explores Connolly's vision for Ireland, his role in the Trade Union movement and in the 1916 Rising and how that vision lives on today.
