We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of renowned wildlife cameraman Doug Allan, who has died aged 74 while trekking in Nepal.
A true pioneer of wildlife filmmaking, Doug’s extraordinary work brought the natural world into our homes with rare beauty, intimacy and courage. As a principal cameraman on landmark BBC series including Planet Earth, Frozen Planet and The Blue Planet, he helped shape how generations have come to see and understand our planet. His long-standing collaborations with Sir David Attenborough set a standard for storytelling that continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.
Doug’s remarkable career was recognised with multiple BAFTA and Emmy awards, including a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Craft at the British Academy Scotland Awards in 2017 — a testament to his enduring impact on the field.
We were honoured to welcome Doug to Clifden Arts Festival in 2022, where he spoke with warmth, insight and quiet passion as part of both the main programme and our Festival School. Those who attended will remember not only the breathtaking images he captured, but also his humility, generosity, and deep respect for the natural world.
His legacy lives on in the images he created and the awareness he fostered of the fragile beauty of our planet.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
