🎶 The Big Sing!

A beautiful event to open the 10th Birr Festival of Music next week!

Led by dynamic choral director Mary Amond O’Brien, children from primary schools across County Offaly come together for a joyful day of high-energy singing workshops,celebrating the power of music and collective performance.

Mary is a passionate and highly motivated choral music facilitator and conductor who from the beginning of her career in 1997 engages regularly in her own professional development.

Believing strongly in the innate singing ability of all children, young people and adults, Mary has worked with many non-auditioned singers and choirs who achieve high standards of performance while demonstrating the power of group singing to connect, excite, challenge and transform singers and their audiences.

Mary founded the choir Aspiro in 1997 and Aspiro’s performances have been acclaimed by the Irish Times and Irish Examiner as ‘remarkable’ and Mary’s conducting as ‘vigorous and dynamic’. Mary was appointed choral director of Cór na nÓg in 2011.

We have a very special panel of adjudicators for this year's The Trench Award Gala Concert on Sunday 3 May at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre.

They are:

Bruno Caproni
Julian Evans

Our six finalists will perform a 15-minute programme oftheir choice on Sunday 3 May when a number of bursaries will be awarded.

Internationally-acclaimed Irish soprano Celine Byrne will make her festival debut on Saturday 2 May at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre.

She will perform timeless favourites like What a Wonderful World, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Climb Every Mountain and The Impossible Dream, alongside beautiful arias and Irish songs.

The concert will also feature David Munro (piano), Siobhán Lynch (cello) and Nicole Hudson (violin).

The Merry Band is a new ensemble, bringing together four of Ireland’s most distinguished and in-demand musicians:

Deirdre O’Leary – clarinet & bass clarinet
Susan Doyle – flute, alto flute & piccolo
Dermot Dunne – accordion
Malachy Robinson – double bass

Outdoor concert (with a cosy indoor option if the weather turns ☔)
