Delighted to see Rossnowlagh Beach secure Blue Flag status for 2026. Congrats to all the team who helped to make it happen.

Make sure you set aside some time to visit this beautiful beach when you come to the Allingham Arts Festival later this year. A short drive drive from Ballyshannon, it's just as stunning in November as it is in the summer.

The Blue Flag awards are international and are reviewed annually, recognising high standards in water quality, safety and environmental management.

Ireland has 89 Blue Flag beaches this year.

Donegal has 12 Blue Flag beaches and 2 Blue Flag marinas - placing Rossnowlagh in very good company alongside many of the most popular beaches in Spain, the world leader for Blue Flag beaches.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.

On this day in 1865...

Our intrepid poet William Allingham, having travelled to Dublin, delivered a lecture on poetry in the 'Chemical Preparation Room' (most likely part of the Royal College of Surgeons' campus in St. Stephens Green), accompanied by fellow poet and barrister, Samuel Ferguson.

Interestingly, Allingham's diary entry on the event does not focus on the importance of what he had to say, or the audience reaction to his talk.

Instead, the poet simply reflects on the calmness he felt while delivering the lecture, noting that he freely ad-libbed in parts, and is reminded of other times in his life when he faced challenging moments and rose to overcome them.

From 'William Allingham - a Diary', published 1908.

Paul Howard and Rรณisรญn Ingle first met in the newsroom of the Sunday Tribune. They shared a sense of humour, a love of mischief, and an office that was, by all accounts, never short of fun. They've been close friends ever since.

Paul is best known as the creator of Ross O'Carroll-Kelly. He has published 19 satirical novels, sold over a million copies, and has three Irish Book Awards to show for it. Recently he turned his attention to writing for TV when he joined โ€˜The Young Offendersโ€™ team to write for the latest season of the Cork-based comedy.
His latest book turns his sharp comic eye on the prospect of a United Ireland, and Rรณisรญn, who has read it, promises it is very funny indeed.

The two will sit down together on Saturday afternoon for what should be a lively, warm, and entertaining event, as the two old friends talk about books, writing, and whatever else may come up!

On Sunday afternoon, Rรณisรญn will be then joined by her mother, the writer Ann Ingle.

Ann Ingle was born in London, came to Dublin with her Irish husband Peter over sixty years ago, and began her writing career on the eve of her eightieth birthday. She is now 87, with three books to her name - including her memoir 'Openhearted' (Penguin Sandycove) and 'Still Here: Everything I Know About Being Older', published by O'Brien Press.

'Still Here' is the subject of Sunday's conversation, and has been described as a frank, warm, and at times funny look at ageing, life, and what it means to keep going. With Rรณisรญn asking the questions, it promises to be as candid as it is moving.

๐‘๐จฬ๐ข๐ฌ๐ขฬ๐ง ๐ˆ๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ž

We mentioned Rรณisรญn in an earlier post, but itโ€™s only fair she gets mentioned again seeing as she will be so busy over the weekend!

Rรณisรญn Ingle is a columnist, features writer and podcaster with The Irish Times. She is the author of two collections of her columns, Pieces of Me and Public Displays of Emotion and is the co-author of The Daughterhood with Natasha Fennell which has been published in several languages. She produces and co-presents the award winning โ€˜Womenโ€™s Podcastโ€™ on irishtimes.com

Sure what else will you be doing on a weekend in November in Ireland? If youโ€™ve been putting off that road-trip to Donegal, now you have the perfect opportunity to make the journey.

"Hello you guys, this is the Michael Harding podcast..."

If you can't wait to see Michael Harding here at the Allingham Arts Festival in November, you might not realise there's a whole world of him available already, aside from his books and Irish Times articles, for free, anytime you want.

Michael has his own podcast on Spotify and Acast, where he does something quietly remarkable, weaving together his own "meditations or reflections or stories from a writer here in Ireland".

Or as he puts it, "ruminating my way through many tracks of wisdom". It's gentle and philosophical, like you're sitting across a table from him in his kitchen somewhere in Leitrim.

Starting at around the 6 minutes mark, you can hear Peter Leonard's fascinating interview with human rights lawyer, Darragh Mackin. Their wide range of topics include:

* The enduring significance of the Human Rights Act and the Good Friday Agreement
* Legacy inquests, including Ballymurphy and the Stardust
* The โ€œhooded menโ€ case and the meaning of torture under international law
* Acting in controversial cases and for unpopular clients
* The Northern Ireland Legacy Act and why it has united opposition across communities
* The role of lawyers when democratic institutions collapse or stall.

If all that puts you in nostalgic mood for last year's festival, you might also like to check out a recent addition to our YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rZ-hTQ4Ab4
On the last day of the Allingham Festival, 2025, Liz Kearney sat down with committee member Michael McMullin to look back over a busy few days. Worth a listen to remind you of just some of the vents that happened or to get a flavour of what the Allingham Festival is all about.
