This 12-month paid internship offers hands-on experience in conservation, community engagement, biodiversity monitoring, environmental awareness, and sustainable resource management.

Mangroves are among the Pacific's greatest natural assets. For many women across Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, mangroves are a source of daily sustenance and income, helping to support families through the harvesting of crabs, shellfish and other marine resources, while also preserving traditional knowledge and practices such as masi and tapa making.

Today, more than 40% of the world's remaining mangroves are under protection, yet these vital ecosystems continue to face growing pressures from unsustainable development and climate change. As powerful blue carbon ecosystems, mangroves store significant amounts of carbon, support fisheries and biodiversity, and serve as natural barriers against storms, flooding and coastal erosion. Their role in strengthening climate resilience and reducing disaster risks has never been more important.

Celebrating World Mangrove Day, let us recognize that protecting mangroves goes beyond conserving nature; it is about empowering women, safeguarding cultural heritage, strengthening livelihoods and building a more resilient Pacific. By investing in mangroves, we invest in stronger communities, healthier oceans and a more secure future for generations to come. When mangroves thrive, people thrive.
