"Architecture as a Catalyst of the City"

As human population grows and land availability decreases, 'residual spaces' continue to expand. In one theory, these spaces that seem undetermined, empty or vacant -- called as 'Terrain Vague' -- unknowingly possess untapped potentials. We believe architecture has the power to enhance these spaces without deviating from the context, it is a 'catalyst'. As architects, understanding local context is key to yielding successful 'reactions' that truly change lives. Be it revitalizing or reusing these residual spaces, architecture responds as an intervention to add meaning into existing fabric and the human activities within. Through AFAIR UI 2018, Department of Architecture UI invites everyone from all walks of life to explore this complex yet compelling idea that, "Hey, why make new things when we can revitalize the old; the architecture way?"

What a ride!
From the first concept ideas to the final presentations, AFAIR UI 2026 has been a journey of creativity, collaboration, and courage.
Thank you to every participant who dared to dream boldly, also every judge who shared their insight. You’ve all made this year’s competition truly unforgettable.

And while the stage lights may fade for now, something new is already in the making.
This January 2026, something big will come. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come!
