“Everything is Doing Something”
Opening

Palm tree fibres, cowhide, driftwood, burnt wood chips and flakes, charcoal ink, bamboo trunks, thread, offcuts fabric, paper, clay, umbrella, canvas, HRM boards, aluminium, glass, brass, and mirrors are part of the languages that construct the visual speeches within the artworks exhibited in “Everything is Doing Something”. Sourced locally from traditional and daily elements, the materials are embedded with geographical, historical, political, or social attachments. They form part of the artworks’ commentaries allowing us to recognise how exchanges and issues taking place in a specific site are tied to broader borders and contexts.
The exhibition is initiated by 12 artists—Agus Mediana ‘Cuprux’, Derry Sembiring, Dewa Sangging, Gung Ama Gama, Gung De Putra ‘Jawok’, Gusde Mariadi, Jaya Kaprus, Kadek ‘Pak Odet’ Sumerta, Made Arsana, Mangde Bendesa, Putra Wali Acok, and Putu Edy ‘Pekong’ Kharisma—who came to together under a collective, known as “The Racun”. The artists examined lived experience, suggesting that material is never just ‘stuff’, and yet neither is it encountered as something remote or independently intentional. As human beings, our senses and intellectual reasoning recognise that material is always shaped through relationships—between body, habit, experiences, social status, tradition, belief, memory, and others, as well as inherent disposition and learned ways of seeing.
“Everything is Doing Something” opens itself to both artists and viewers through meaning, which is neither isolated within objects nor solely within minds, but it arises in the ongoing relationship between them and how they may comply logically and consistent with fact or reality that is exempted from falsehoods, misrepresentations, or illusions.
