Hong Kong pianist Elsa Lee has performed across Australia, England, Hong Kong, Poland, and the US. Praised in Kraków as “extraordinary, expressive, powerful, and vibrated the whole concert hall,” she has performed as keyboardist with ensembles and orchestras at Eastman, the Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, and the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, and her solo and collaborative performances have been broadcast on Radio 4 Hong Kong. She has also appeared as guest artist, speaker, and faculty at the ArtsAhimsa Chamber Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts, and in annual concerts of Music Angel Orchestra and True Colors Symphony in Hong Kong. Dr. Lee holds degrees from Eastman and Columbia, previously conducted the University of Oregon Symphony Orchestra and Navy Chamber Winds, and has presented award-winning research at major international music conferences. She is currently an artist-teacher at HKBU, where she also teaches topics including style and performance, music pedagogy, piano pedagogy, advanced piano performance studies, and piano literature, while holding other teaching positions at HKAPA and HKU SPACE.

影片呈現他如何掌握手臂重量支持手指的概念，特別是重量的釋放與轉移過程。
最令人印象深刻的是，他能敏銳察覺技巧中那些細微而幾乎「隱形」的層面，尤其是重量轉移的機制。雖說將理解轉化為流暢執行，仍需內化複雜的協調網絡，但他已邁出一大步。🎹✨

This video features a student at diploma level exploring how arm weight supports the finger, especially how the weight releases and transfers. He applied for the piano performance workshop because he wanted to really understand piano technique in depth as he felt confused by different sources of information that sometimes even contradict each other. We then transitioned to one-to-one coaching.
What impressed me most is his great ability to sense those subtle “invisible” parts of the technique, especially weight transfer. I’m really amazed at how he gets the logic behind it, though actually executing it involves a whole complex network of coordination to internalize.

🤓 導師履歷：
劉穎淳於2025年獲得香港演藝學院音樂碩士學位，主修鋼琴合作。他曾擔任演藝歌劇《唐璜》和《風流寡婦》的排練伴奏。劉氏亦於2017年獲得香港教育大學創意藝術與文化榮譽文學士及音樂教育榮譽學士（一級榮譽）。他曾獲得多項獎學金，包括香港特別行政區政府獎學金、才藝發展獎學金、香港潮州商會獎學金和柏斯育才獎學金。
劉氏已考獲聖三一音樂學院鋼琴演奏文憑（LTCL）及音樂理論專業文憑（LMusTCL），亦擁有多年教授鋼琴、及5級、8級、AMusTCL樂理的經驗。目前，劉氏擔任元朗文協童聲合唱團的伴奏及樂理導師，並為不同合唱團和樂團編寫合唱及器樂作品。他的原創作品曾在新加坡國際合唱節、世界合唱節（香港）、演藝學院聲樂節等場合首演。

哩位學生仔（11歲）練緊 Aaron Copland 嘅 “The Cat And The Mouse”。佢同好多現代小朋友一樣，都有啲急性子，練琴如果唔夠耐性，好容易會彈到 sloppy同 insecure。哩首歌有唔少快段落，用咗形象化方式表現貓同老鼠追逐。當彈奏左右手交替嘅快段落，有時會因為手臂太緊張影響節奏、音色同平均性。�今日 run through，見到學生仔今個星期有明顯進步；睇埋佢嘅 practice journal，覺得十分欣慰。佢開始聽話，有耐性，有系統咁練琴，仲不失幽默感——將首歌改名做 “The Cat And The Tension”, 喺有效練習中搵到屬於佢嘅樂趣😄。

When I think of figures in Western music history, —a renowned composer and teacher—always comes to mind. Her story fascinates me deeply: she shaped the artistic vision of legendary musicians such as Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Leonard Bernstein. What inspires me most is how, as a woman in a male-dominated field during an era of limited women’s rights, she became a vital guiding force behind many monumental male composers and musicians. I admire her courage and authority in defying prevailing gender norms, and her legacy continues to empower women in music today.

As music educators, I often see students struggle to move beyond the basics of music theory. Nadia Boulanger’s famous quote, “To study music, you must learn the rules. To create music, you must break them,” emphasizes the importance of balancing technical knowledge with artistic expression. Preparing for graded exams is a good way to understand fundamentals, but it is sometimes mistaken for complete musical understanding—similar to how learning basic grammar in primary school doesn’t mean a person can master the art of writing. Introductory music theory is an essential starting point, but it is not enough to provide deep insight into music or a composer’s expressive skills, especially when the learning heavily relies on labeling and memorization. Moreover, composers often express themselves by breaking musical rules.
Reflecting on my own teaching experience, I realize guiding students on their musical journey requires a thoughtful approach. “Creating music” goes beyond composing; it also means making interpretive decisions in performance. For example, students must internalize the fundamentals, such as pulse, rhythm, and structure of a piece before experimenting with rubato, phrasing, or musical directions. Yet, I’ve often seen this order reversed. The sequence of learning matters: only by understanding the rules can students use them to express meaningfully and artistically, whether performing or teaching. This is the profound philosophy behind Boulanger’s famous quote.

恭喜學生ATCL Distinction👏🏼🎉這位學生今年二月才開始跟隨我學習，來準備五月的考試。從彈奏觸鍵方面、對不同音樂風格的掌握和音樂感都在這三個月內以有限時間努力改善了不少，（亦包括改正了不少在不同曲目中一些明顯錯音或錯拍子的細節💧). 最終一take過以81分取得Distinction，實在替他感到高興👍🏼
有趣地，當中的comment summary有不少關鍵字帶出了我在教學上的一些焦點：
✅ ”clear familiarity with the musical material” 👉🏼就是明白樂曲當中的音樂處理
✅ ”good musicianship and an insightful approach to the music presented”👉🏼就是如何有一套分析來帶出音樂中的內裡乾坤從而加強音樂感
✅ ”an understanding of composer intent and contextual awareness”👉🏼正正就是我經常提到的如何跨越樂譜上的記號去詮釋作曲家的意思！context, context, context重要字眼要講三次
