Dear racers,
We’ve read through all the comments and have also conducted our own internal debrief on the event. We acknowledge that the queues were very long yesterday, both to enter the race, as well as for the bag check. This was not helped by the heat yesterday.
As the organisers, how the event was managed is clearly our responsibility. We would like to explain some of the underlying reasons why yesterday unfolded the way it did.
1. The key issue was that more than 250 volunteers did not turn up yesterday, which caused a significant slow-down in all aspects of operations. In RYFL races that we have organised in Singapore, we budget for a certain amount of no-shows, but this was beyond all our planning expectations. This also had the effect of driving up the workload of our volunteers and stretched our manpower very thin. Overall, we were very encouraged by the team-spirit and dedication that the volunteers demonstrated yesterday in the face of a challenging work-load.
2. When we realised that the lines were long, we started distributing water / beer to the queues waiting to get in, as well as re-deployed volunteers to the critical choke-points of the bag-check and entry, as well as opened up a third bag check area. In the balance between being fair to those that had pre-paid vs. speeding up the process, this was one of the trade-offs we had to make. We were distributing the water free, but the $20 / bottle of drink was being sold by our partner vendors who set their own pricing.
3. Due to the area regulations of West Kowloon, no large shelters can be erected unless they are drilled into the ground due to wind/typhoon considerations, so this was an area we had already considered for the wet weather program, but were constrained.
4. We are very sorry about the behaviour of the zombies / runners who caused discomfort to others. As you know, the rules and regulations were disseminated via email and on the website before the race day. Yesterday, the zombies were briefed again on the roles and regulations just before they were dispatched to their stations, and the runners were briefed in every single wave as well. We acknowledge that greater management of zombie/runner interaction needs to be enforced by the ICs at each station. As a consequence of the behaviour, we know that there were some injuries. We are consolidating the details from the medical team and will be following up with every single case going forward.
5. Overall, there were 13,000 people who went through the race and many stayed till the party ended at 9. Thanks again to the volunteers who made this possible, as well as the racers who stayed with us despite the heat and the wait. We would also like to hear from those who had a good time as well.
6. We have organised many races previously, and we intend to keep on doing so. This race was not up to our usual high standards for unforeseen reasons, and for that, we ask your forgiveness. We take all your comments onboard and will improve in future.
Please PM us if there are further issues you would like to follow up on.
