[Scaling UHTC Coatings for Carbon-Based Composites]
Carbon-based composite materials, known for their lightweight, high strength, and excellent high-temperature stability, are increasingly important in extreme environment applications, such as aero-engines and thermal protection systems for hypersonic aircraft. However, their inherent susceptibility to oxidation in oxygen-rich environments above 400°C severely limits their service life. As a result, developing highly-efficient anti-oxidation coatings has become increasingly crucial.
Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) coatings, due to their high melting point (>3,000°C) and outstanding oxidation resistance, have become a core technological approach to addressing this oxidation challenge. The structural design of UHTC coatings is fundamental to improving their antioxidant properties. Currently, 4 main structural systems have been developed, including single-layer coatings, double-layer coatings, gradient coatings, and nano-toughened coatings.
However, to enable wider applications of UHTC coatings, a better balance between performance, cost and the demands of large-scale production is needed. Furthermore, novel coating structure design, advanced processing technologies and a complete performance evaluation system will be key directions for future development.
UHTC coatings are poised to be a crucial technology for driving next-generation thermal protection systems for aerospace applications. Coating leaders who are able to deliver reliable, scalable UHTC processing technologies will be well positioned to capture this niche market.

[Aerospace Coatings Market: Drivers, Challenges & Trends]
According to Mordor Intelligence, an India-based market research company, the aerospace coatings market is projected to expand from US$2.99 billion in 2026 to US$3.92 billion by 2031, registering a CAGR of 5.52% over the forecast period.
OEM applications represented 51.6% of the market in 2025, but maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) are expanding fastest at 6.3% CAGR, driven by aging fleets and repaint cycles. Asia-Pacific is forecast to grow fastest at 6.2% CAGR, supported by China's C919 Large Aircraft Programme and India's manufacturing incentives.
Global passenger traffic growth also supports demand, particularly in Asia-Pacific, where airlines are intensifying repaint cycles to preserve aesthetics and comply with corrosion directives. Fast-cure topcoats are increasingly favoured for their service efficiency. Asia-Pacific facilities, especially in Singapore, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, now manage a significant share of global heavy maintenance, importing primers and topcoats primarily from North American and European suppliers.
Despite strong growth prospects, the market faces several restraints. VOC emission regulations are expected to reduce CAGR by 0.7%, particularly in North America and the EU, where compliance increases raw material costs and extends cycle times. Waterborne systems can meet these standards but require humidity-controlled booths, favouring larger MRO facilities and driving consolidation.
