Tsing Shan Monastery, located in Castle Peak, Tuen Mun, is one of the three ancient temples in Hong Kong. The local history can be traced back to 1,600 years ago. According to legend, an eminent monk crossed the sea on a wooden cup and arrived at Castle Peak, Tuen Mun, where he settled for a short-term stay. During his stay, he spread Buddhism and is considered the founder of Buddhism in Hong Kong. Castle Peak in Tuen Mun is the origin of Buddhism in Hong Kong. The feasibility of developing Tsing Shan Monastery and nearby temples into religious tourist attractions is explored so as to continue to be the origin of Buddhism in Hong Kong and continue to spread Buddhism.

This proposal hopes to develop Castle Peak in Tuen Mun into a famous religious tourism & leisure attraction, and reshape the place into a resort for promoting Buddhism, just like the origin of Buddhism in Hong Kong, reconnecting the broken elements, integrate Buddhism, natural landscape and history, and integrate the Buddhist concept of "detaching from the secular world and cultivating oneself" into the natural landscape of Castle Peak, so that people of different ages and backgrounds can find spiritual peace here and rethink the relationship between religion and modern society as well as when spreading religion, how to achieve a balance between publicity and reducing exclusivity.

This project envisions the Kam Tin River as the lifeblood that reconnects Kam Tin’s fractured urban tapestry, weaving together its historic villages, burgeoning new towns, and neglected waterways into a cohesive, vibrant community. By revitalizing the river as a blue-green corridor, the design aim to transform it from a polluted, overlooked channel into a dynamic ecological and social spine that bridges the past and present. The design strategically links three critical zones: the historic grid of Kam Tin Old Town, the rural expanses of Shui Lau Tin Tsuen, and the modern developments near Kam Sheung Road MTR station. Through phased water quality remediation, wetland restoration, and riverside trails, the river will regain its role as a recreational and cultural hub, fostering interactions between indigenous villagers and newcomers. A new riverside road and cycling network will shorten travel distances by 40%, while pocket parks and village-type commercial centers—inspired by vernacular architecture—will activate underutilized spaces, celebrating Kam Tin’s heritage. By integrating Transit-Oriented Development principles, the project harmonizes sustainable mobility with community-centric design, ensuring the river becomes a shared “living room” for all. This vision transcends mere infrastructure, cultivating a resilient landscape where ecological stewardship, cultural memory, and social equity converge, empowering Kam Tin to thrive as a model of rural-urban symbiosis in Hong Kong.

During Ghost Month, a young boy delivering water to an elderly man in a decaying Hong Kong estate is ensnared by spectral forces. Flickering lights, cryptic amulets, and ghostly visions weave a web of terror, steeped in cultural superstition. The building, a maze of dread, binds him in its haunted grip, revealing his fate as part of the eerie realm. The film ends with his photo on a memorial plaque, a quiet echo of his eternal stay among the spirits.

The rising number of accidents in the construction industry, particularly in A&A work, has become a major issue, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures. Among the incidents, many falls from heights in A&A work make headlines, whereas manual handling injuries have minimal public record. These injuries can be just as serious and contribute considerably to long-term health consequences for workers. Lack of public knowledge and underreporting have contributed to a continual underestimating of the risks associated with manual handling in A&A operations. This long-standing issue in the construction industry continues to be unaddressed, emphasizing the need for more effective and focused initiatives to reduce such occupational dangers.

In recent years, a significant technological advancement has emerged in the form of wearable exoskeletons designed to assist workers in performing physically demanding tasks. One notable example is the HILTI exoskeleton, which has been developed specifically to support workers in high-strain activities. Despite the promising potential of such innovations, their adoption in real-world industrial applications remains limited, and there is a noticeable scarcity of academic research evaluating their effectiveness, particularly in the context of manual handling tasks. This dissertation aims to address this gap by investigating the application of exoskeleton technology as a means to reduce the risk of manual handling injuries in the workplace, contributing valuable insights into its practical benefits and limitations.

The discussion will begin with the review on current construction environments and injuries reasons, followed by the injury situation of different trade division.

Contingencies of Daily Exploration: Space-Making Strategies for Urban Pedestrian Infrastructure and Public Transport Systems

Every day, morning and night, modern people constantly commute busily by train or by bus. However, the transient spaces involved, which are the transport and pedestrian infrastructure in modern cities, are more focused on function. People care about efficiency and forget the meaning of travelling daily, resulting in a stressful and compact life. Considering that Hong Kong has a complete walking network for commuting (residential buildings, parks, shopping malls, building corridors, footbridges and underground passageways, stations and bus stops and carriage, etc.). The multi-layer, three-dimensional networks and activities are well-developed and worth redesigning to cooperate with land public transport as a journey. This project aims to reimagine the travelling environment using one complete commute journey from Kwai Chung to Chai Wan and return, with the Situationists' perspective and understanding of modern cities depicted as fragmented sites. Using design strategies (sensory mitigation, spatial experience, collective memory) to response to the super-modernity of "non-place": overabundance of events, spatial overabundance, and the individualisation of references. Ultimately, commute spaces are transformed into places that capture life's fleeting moments.

In recent years, Hong Kong young people are increasingly influenced by global cultures like K-pop and J-pop, leading to a weakened connection with local culture. Although the government has put effort into promoting in-depth tourism in Hong Kong, youngesters' participation remains low. However, there are many unique cultural elements in Hong Kong, such as neon light, food, movies and architecture, that are worth noticing.

As press-on nails have become a popular fashion item, many companies and museums have already integrated these into cultural themes, transforming them into creative cultural products. Therefore, this project not only focuses on launching new products - press-on nails, but also aims to make use of this innovative cultural carrier to encourage young people to actively explore and appreciate Hong Kong’s culture.

Bubble was playing with building blocks at home. After seeing his creation, he suddenly thought of the building in front of his estate. He looked at the construction site across the street with great excitement, admiring how the workers there could build a huge skyscraper. Excitedly, he tried to transform his original building blocks into the shape of a skyscraper, wanting to show his creation to the workers across the street. However, he unexpectedly noticed a worker walking towards the edge of the building. Bubble felt puzzled. Seeing the worker standing still, Bubble seemed to realize something and hurriedly rushed towards the entrance of the construction site.

What is the worker doing on the edge? What are their choices for the next move? Will their future be altered to a greater or lesser extent because of the next move?

ClimbAI is an advanced artificial intelligence system designed to detect climbing automatically holds from images and videos. This project aims to integrate artificial intelligence into the realm of indoor rock climbing by enabling climbers and coaches to swiftly analyze climbing routes, assess their difficulty, and provide valuable feedback without the need for manual annotation. Leveraging advanced deep learning and computer vision techniques, the system identifies various types of holds and their positions on the wall, facilitating route assessment and progress tracking over time.

A functional prototype has been developed utilizing a YOLO-based model for rapid and accurate hold detection. The system efficiently processes climbing videos by analyzing only the first frame for hold detection and applying these results throughout the entire session, significantly reducing processing time from hours to just over a minute. This efficiency renders the tool practical for real-world applications in climbing gyms and training environments.

Future developments will focus on expanding the dataset to encompass additional gyms and a broader variety of holds, thereby enhancing the model's accuracy and generalizability. Additionally, plans are in place to create a user-friendly interface that enables climbers and coaches to easily upload videos, view analysis results, and monitor their progress over time.

“Palette” is a dystopian animated narrative set in a nation under strict cultural censorship. The story centers on a creator who faces repeated censorship due to perceived deficiencies in “diversity.” In a pivotal moment, a powerful corporation offers him tools designed to circumvent the censorship system – tools that are inherently tied to exploitation. This situation compels him to reflect on the true cost of acceptance.

Through its metaphorical animation, “Palette” seeks to raise awareness about the commercialization and distortion of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) principles, emphasizing how genuine respect can be reduced to mere gimmicks and superficial labels.

Critical Study of How Innovative Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) Can Solve Skilled Labour Shortage and Reduce Carbon Emissions in Hong Kong Construction Industry
CHING Sum Yin
BSc (Hons) in Surveying

The construction industry in Hong Kong faces a significant skilled labour shortage, impacting its ability to meet the demands for quality and quantity in projects. Economic recovery and increased government investment in infrastructure exacerbate this issue. Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) offers a potential solution by enhancing productivity and reducing reliance on on-site labour.

This study aims to understand the skill crisis, assess the uptake of MiC, and analyze its advantages and disadvantages. A questionnaire survey collected views on the causes of the skill shortage and its impact on the housing crisis. Case studies highlighted that MiC could reduce on-site labour demand by about 70%, as much of the work is completed off-site.

Additionally, the construction sector is a major contributor to carbon emissions, driven by high energy consumption, use of high-emitting materials, and inadequate sustainable practices. The study found that adopting MiC could lower on-site carbon emissions by approximately 20% by decreasing waste and optimizing material usage. Overall, the findings advocate for the wider implementation of MiC as a strategy to address both the skilled labour crisis and environmental concerns in Hong Kong's construction sector.
