Biography

Joe Moran (he/him) is a British-Irish artist and choreographer with a wide-ranging practice incorporating performance, film, and choreographic drawing, alongside participatory and curatorial projects. His work centres the body and embodied presence as a site of complex subjectivities and political unrest, with queering frequently deployed as its principal critical strategy. His practice is informed by a background in improvisation and experimentation, and a fascination with formal choreographic composition and expanded choreography.
Joe presents work internationally across theatre, performance, and festival contexts, and has worked as a dancer with choreographers including Deborah Hay, Florence Peake, Siobhan Davies, and Stina Nyberg. His work has been presented at venues and festivals including Sadler’s Wells, Tanzfestival Winterthur, Tanzhaus NRW, and Tanzwerkstatt Europa. His recent work Materiality Will Be Rethought, commissioned by Whitechapel Gallery, was awarded the Best Choreography Prize at Mexico City International Video Dance Festival (2022). Joe has extensive experience as an educator, facilitator, and mentor, and is a certified teacher of Skinner Releasing Technique

// Materiality Will Be Rethought //

Film and Performance
by choreographer JOE MORAN
Saturday 28 March, Mammot, Athens
20:00

Materiality Will Be Rethought navigates the moving body as a site of political unrest and complex subjectivities, dance’s potential to animate and disrupt architectural and public space, and the physicality of the dancer’s voice. Commissioned by Whitechapel Gallery in dialogue with Carlos Bunga’s exhibition Something Necessary and Useful, Materiality Will Be Rethought was originally conceived as a site-specific live performance before being reimagined as an artist moving image work during Covid.

For this special presentation, Joe will present the full 30min film, projected at a large-scale within Mammot’s main space, followed by a live performance of extracts from the work, performed by local, Athens-based dancers.

Tickets at the door 10euros

Joe Moran (he/him) is a British-Irish artist and choreographer with a wide-ranging practice incorporating performance, artist moving image and choreographic drawing works, alongside advocacy, curation, critical writing and dramaturgy projects and an extensive facilitation, participation and mentoring practice. His work centres the body and embodied presence as a site of complex subjectivities and political unrest with queering frequently deployed as its principal critical strategy. Joe’s work is informed by a background in improvisation and experimentation, and a fascination with the problems and opportunities of formal choreographic composition and notions of expanded choreography. He works extensively in galleries and visual art contexts, as well as making works for the stage and film. Joe is Founding Artistic Director of Dance Art Foundation through which his performance, organising and curatorial work is produced; this involves organising and advocacy that centres independent artists and collective action for systemic change. Much of the ethos and inquiry in his work is informed by the complex lived experiences of queerness and his working-class Irish immigrant background.

On February 25, join us for a live conversation between visual artist Athina Koumparouli and curator Daphne Dragona, organised on the occasion of Athina’s participation in the Kochi Biennale in Kerala, supported through the ARTWORKS Grants programme.

“Deep Sea, Deep Time” draws connections between Muziris, an ancient trading port, and the submarine cable systems running beneath Kochi’s shores today, transmitting digital data along routes shaped by colonial trade. Prompted by the recent retirement of one of the region’s major submarine internet cables, Koumparouli approaches its submerged remains as material traces of our digital present, fragments that may one day orient future researchers toward layered histories of extraction, exploitation, colonial infrastructure, and environmental consequence.

The discussion will focus on the project’s development, from its initial research and fieldwork to its material strategies and final installation, while considering archaeological methodology as a framework for artistic inquiry.

Χοροθέατρο - Ένα ντουέτο χορού κοιτάζει ταυτόχρονα μπροστά και… πίσω από την κάμερα και τη σκηνή

13/01/2026

| INSIDE OUT
17, 18, 23 Ιανουαρίου | 17, 18 & 23 January 2026
📍Mammot Athens (Σίνα 52, Αθήνα | Sina 52, Athens)

Τι σημαίνει making of;
Πότε είναι έτοιμη μια παράσταση;

What does “making of” mean?
When is a performance ready?

INSIDE OUT is a hybrid performance where dance and film practices blend in a playful duet. Konstantina Barkouli-Gavri, Nadi Gogoulou, the two creators-performers explore what happens when the “inside” and the “outside”, the “front” and the “back”, refuse to stay in place. Elements that are usually unseen are revealed, transforming the stage into a constantly changing environment that illuminates different perspectives. The performance navigates between choreographic structure and the cinematic frame, creating an experience that raises questions regarding stage practices.

With humor and self-mockery, the two choreographers try to “direct” themselves, leaving room for awkwardness, excitement and surprises that arise in the creative process.

→ Supported by through its annual Grants Scheme.
