Winners of The Gambia Prize for Literature 2022 Announced

The winners of the Gambia Prize for Literature 2022 were announced in a colorful ceremony held yesterday at Alliance Francaise Banjul.

The event was attended by Gambian writers, educationists, students, teachers, critics, children, bookshops, and book lovers, among others dignitaries.

This week Friday & Saturday, the only place to be is at Alliance Française.

The Kunta Kinteh International Book Festival includes an exhibition of Gambian books, a hall of fame for Gambian literature, autographing of books, keynote addresses, spoken word poetry, dramas, fashion, and musical performances.

The Gambia is home to many talented young people in the fields of arts, education, literature, theater, and poetry.

The Gambia Prize for Literature (GPL) will be awarded to the Gambia’s best poets, novelists, playwrights, historians, spoken word poets, intellectuals, at the event.

The theme for 2022 is ‘’Reading Gambian Literature’’.

Banjul, 29th September 2022 – The Young Writers’ Association of The Gambia will be presenting their positions on the preparations for the first annual Kunta Kinteh International Book Festival (KKIBF) to be held from 14-15 October 2022 at Alliance Francaise Banjul, The Gambia.
Distinguished members of the press and media fraternity are hereby invited to a press conference to be held on 7th October 2022 at Alliance Francaise at 10 a.m. Members of the press wishing to attend the event must be in attendance at least 30 minutes before the stated time. The objective of this press conference is to map out opportunities to empower Gambian writers; help propel youth voices into the global dialogue and reveal plans about the upcoming book festival. Transport fares of journalists (2 from each media house) will be adequately refunded.

Support Gambian authors is the message at the Kunta Kinteh International Book Festival: ‘We will be very grateful’

Delivering a pre-recorded message as part of preparations for the Gambia Prize for Literature (GPL) on Tuesday, president of the the Young Writers Association of The Gambia, ML Sowe detailed the damage caused to his native publishing industry as a result of the poor readership and insufficient publishing companies.

“ We have a problem of readership. We do not read in the name of God, we read in the name of Satan. It is extremely difficult for the Gambian publishing business today. More than two-thirds of the country’s population don’t read’’, said the award-winning author.

The book festival is an annual literary, artistic, cultural, and creative arts event bringing together new and established writers from across The Gambia and Africa to promote, develop and celebrate creativity on the African continent in various genres.
