Mepe Marks 69th Afenortoza Durbar with Special Tribute to Eight (8) Fallen National Heroes
The Chiefs and People of the Mepe Traditional Area in the Volta Region will mark the 69th Afenortoza tomorrow Saturday,9th August, 2025 with a grand durbar.
Afenorto, meaning “period of rest at home” is the traditional festival of Mepe celebrated annually to renew the sense of oneness of the people.
In line with President John Mahama’s directive for a 3-day national mourning for the eight fallen national heroes who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash, a special traditional ceremony will be observed tomorrow during the festival procession and the grand durbar of the Afenortoza.
The Mepe Traditional Council (MTC) at its meeting today with the Mepe Development Association (MDA)has resolved that:
1. All Chiefs and Queens of the five clans of Mepe will wear a black armband( piece of cloth) on their left arm;
2. All linguist staff, representing the authority of all Chiefs and Queens will be clad in black cloth;
3. Invited dignitaries, sons and daughters of Mepe, tourists, all and sundry are encouraged to also wear a black armband on their left arm;
4. Traditional prayers will be offered for the souls of the departed.
The MTC, together with MDA, sends its deepest condolences to the President, the Ghana Armed Forces, families of our fallen heroes and the whole nation.
The MDA is by this press release extending a special invitation to all to come join the Chiefs and People of Mepe to honour our fallen heroes and celebrate our rich culture and heritage.
