Pele: Brazil football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento dies aged 82
Brazilian football legend Pele, arguably the greatest player ever, has died at the age of 82.
He is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.
The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa's Player of the Century in 2000.
He had been suffering with kidney and prostate problems in recent years
Pele had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, after the tumour was detected in routine tests. He was readmitted to hospital in late November 2022.
His daughter Kely Nascimento has kept fans updated on her father's condition with regular social media updates from hospital.
On Thursday she posted a picture of what appeared to be Pele's family's hands on his body in hospital and wrote: "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."
Pele's Twitter account posted: "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever."
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, became a global star when, aged 17, he helped Brazil win the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, forcing his way into the starting line-up by the knockout stages.
He scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Wales in the quarter-finals, a hat-trick against France in the semi-final and two in a 5-2 triumph over the hosts in the final.
What made Pele great
Scored a reported 1,281 goals in 1,363 games Made 14 appearances at World Cup finals, scoring 12 goals
Racked up 126 goals in 1959 alone Only player to win three World Cups
Pele had made his debut for club side Santos two years earlier at the age of 15, scoring in a 7-1 win over Corinthians de Santo Andre.
It was the first of 643 goals he would score for the club in official competitions over 19 years, although Santos claim the total is more than 1,000 once exhibition matches - often against high-profile European opposition - are taken into account.
At the 1962 World Cup, Pele, then 21, scored a brilliant individual goal in a 2-0 win over Mexico to open their campaign, but was injured in the next match and watched from the sidelines as his team defended their title.
The final part of his trilogy of World Cup wins was his most iconic. After being fouled out of the 1966 tournament in England, he was the fulcrum of a thrilling attacking team that swept to the title in 1970, scoring the opening goal in a 4-1 win over Italy in the final.
From his joyful tears on the chest of team-mate Nilton Santos to his embrace with England captain Bobby Moore, Pele's moments of magic have spanned eras and defined the history of the sport.
He finished his club career as part of a star-studded New York Cosmos side, playing alongside German legend Franz Beckenbauer and fellow 1970 World Cup winner Carlos Alberto.
"In music there is Beethoven and the rest. In football, there is Pele and the rest," he said in 2000.
In a poll conducted by BBC Sport in 2020, Pele was voted the greatest player, ahead of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff.
The image of the shirtless Pele being carried aloft by team-mates and supporters after the World Cup was won in Mexico City in 1970 is seared on the memory, along with that famous picture of another shirtless embrace with England captain Bobby Moore (above), a gesture packed with mutual respect, after Brazil's 1-0 group game victory in Guadalajara.
His greatness can be measured by the simple fact that he could make football a spectacle of natural grace and beauty when he missed as much as when he scored.
One of the game's first global personalities, Pele layered his brilliance across a career spanning from a teenager with Santos to a money-spinner at New York Cosmos.
Wherever football is played, the name of Pele will be synonymous with it.

Messi and Argentina triumph on penalties after historic final

Keir Radnedge - AIPS Football Delegate
DOHA, December 18, 2022 - Leo Messi has scaled his last, highest peak but only after it all almost went shatteringly wrong before Argentina, twice pulled back from a winning lead, came through by 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the 2022 World Cup Final concluded in a 3-3 draw.
MOST ASTONISHING CLIMAX
The duel between the two best teams at the finals and the game’s two finest players in Messi and Kylian Mbappe presented the most astonishing climax to the first World Cup in the Arab world.
Mbappe, the finals’ eight-goal top scorer, ended with a hat-trick despite finishing on the losing side as France lost the crown secured four years ago in Moscow.
Yet possibly the greatest World Cup Final of all time was never a contest. until the last 10 minutes of normal time.
ARGENTINA DOMINANCE
Argentina, empowered to the night sky by the chanting, singing and drumming of their ecstatic fans, owned the game from the opening minutes and struck twice in a 13-minute spell midway through the first half to lead 2-0 and stand on the brink of a third triumph after 1978 and 1986.
Messi had struck the opening goal from a penalty and helped create the second for Angel Di Maria. It appeared the most one-sided final since France beat Brazil 3-0 in Paris in 1998.
FRANCE FIGHT BACK
Then France, debilitated by injuries and influenza and going down without much of a fight, fought back from the dead with two Mbappe goals out of nowhere in the 80th and 81st minutes, the first a penalty.
Argentina regained the lead through Messi in extra time but Mbappe, with another penalty, condemned the final to a third shootout after success for Brazil in 1994 and Italy in 2006.
Mbappe blasted home the first kick but Kingsley Coman’s kick was saved by Emiliano Martinez and Aurelien Thouameni shot wide. Gonzalo Montiel beat Hugo Lloris with the kick which sent all Argentina into delerium.
The French had had a day less than Argentina to recover from a physically punishing semi-final against Morocco and, after a busy four weeks, and that appeared significant. Mbappe had barely had a kick – until the dramatic comeback.
The World Cup extravaganza had cost Qatar £200bn while FIFA has reaped £7bn. History will judge who emerged with the better deal but in the short term the benefits were all for the fans in general and the Argentinian majority in the capacity 88,966 crowd in particular.
SHARP START
Argentina made the sharper start, assisted by sloppy French passing. Angel Di Maria skied the first decent chance over the bar and was then tripped by Dembele for the penalty which broke the deadlock. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak did not need VAR to help him decide to point to the spot and Messi duly shot Argentina ahead.
Argentina were eager to stretch their lead. Driven forward by the vigour of Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez in midfield, they were showing a far superior will to engage in combat.
France were playing as if in a trance, and fell further behind in the 36th minute. Nahuel Molina and Alexis Mac Allister broke up a French attack down the left, Messi found Julian Alvarez and he sent the perpetual motion Mac Allister clear. The midfielder’s cross was weighted perfectly for onrushing Di Maria to swipe first time across and beyond Lloris.
This was in only the 36th minute yet France looked down and out already. It was an admission of desperation that coach Didier Deschamps immediately replaced the ineffective Olivier Giroud and Dembele with Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani.
FRANCE GAIN MOMENTUM
France, within 45 minutes of losing their grip on the World Cup, sought to raise their game after the interval but appeared down and out until the 79th minute. Then substitute Randal Kolo Muani was chased down by Nicolas Otamendi and Mbappe struck home from the penalty spot.
One more minute and France, incredibly, were level through Mbappe again. Substitute Kingsley Coman robbed Messi – of all people – in midfield and Marcus Thuram exchanged passes with Mbappe who volleyed fiercely past Martinez.
Now all the momentum was with France but in extra time Argentina pulled themselves back together. In the second half, Messi forced a diving save from Hugo Lloris then he put Argentina back into the lead in the 109th minute after the goalkeeper had saved bravely from substitute Lautaro Martinez.
Still, coach Didier Deschamps’s team did not know when they were beaten. Mbappe completed his hat-trick from another penalty after his drive had been blocked by the arm of Montiel.
All in vain, as it turned out.

Messi wins 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball
Argentine forward Lionel Messi has been named the best player in the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament for the second time after defeating France on penalties to win the coveted trophy.
The striker made history with his side in this year’s tournament, leading the South American side to win their third World Cup trophy after Maradona did in 1986.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored seven goals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, to boost his chances of winning his eighth annual award as he became the first player in history to win the Golden ball twice in his career, 2014 and 2022.
The 35-year-old has been longing for such a moment to lift the world trophy with Argentina, having come close to the trophy in 2014 after losing to Germany in the finals.
Messi has now become a household name in the world of football, winning every tournament he had participated in, settling the rivalry between him and Portuguese legend, Cristiano Ronaldo who is yet to win a World Cup trophy.
The Paris Saint German forward after marking his first World Cup appearance in 2006, had featured in four other World Cup tournaments as he might be drawing down the curtains on his international career soon.
Messi has now scored 794 goals in 1003 career games, as he inches close to the end of his football career.
Argentina defeated France on 4-2 on penalties to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Roberto
As the fifth most popular name, there have been 46 Robertos in the World Cup. Its English variant, Robert, was once the number-one name in the USA. Chilean midfielder Jorge Valdivia represented his national team in World Cup 2010 and 2014 and was praised by Pelé and regarded as one of the best in the world by Carlos Valderrama.
A spokesperson from Gamblingngo.com commented on the findings:
“Football fans dream of representing their national team in the World Cup. This study highlights the most common names to appear internationally throughout history. Classic names, mainly Spanish and Latin, make up the most popular names. It is not apparent that these names dictate skill. However, legendary players will likely continue to influence the names of future footballing generations, much like how the popularity of the name Cristiano soared as Ronaldo rose to prominence.

Introducing ‘Al Hilm’, The Official Match Ball of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Finals
• Al Hilm translates as “The Dream” in Arabic and features a unique graphic design, setting it apart from the Al Rihla used throughout the tournament so far
• Al Hilm will be the official ball for the semi-finals and final
• Just like Al Rihla, Al Hilm will feature the ‘Connected Ball’ technology, which has proved a huge success in making semi-automated offside decisions faster and more accurate
Introducing Al Hilm – unveiled today by adidas as the Official Match Ball for the semi-finals and final of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
Al Hilm, which translates as “The Dream” in Arabic, follows on from the Official Match Ball of the group stages, Al Rihla, or “The Journey”.
Utilizing the latest technological advances in ball design, Al Hilm includes the same unprecedented adidas ‘Connected Ball’ technology as Al Rihla, which has proven invaluable in helping match officials making faster and more accurate decisions during this World Cup.
Combined with player position data, the innovation offers Video Match Officials instant data, to help optimize decision making for a seamless fan experience. By combining the ball data captured by IMU sensors within the ball and applying artificial intelligence, the new technology supports the semi-automated offside system, especially by providing the exact moment the ball is played in tight offside situations.
Johannes Holzmüller, Director of Football Technology & Innovation at FIFA, said: “With the development of the connected ball technology, adidas made it possible that an additional important layer of information is available to the video match officials. The data from the ball unlocks new insights for storytelling around the unique moments on the pitch at this World Cup.”
The ball was also designed with the environment at its heart - all components have been carefully considered, and Al Hilm is the first FIFA World Cup™ semi-finals and final ball made using only water-based inks and glues.
The design, meanwhile, is set on a textured gold base colour which features a subtle triangular pattern, drawing inspiration from the sparkling deserts of the region that surround the city of Doha, the colour of the FIFA World Cup™ trophy, and the pattern of the Qatar flag.
“Al Hilm represents a beacon of light on the power of sport and football to bring the world together. Millions will tune in from almost every country around the globe, united by their passion for the game. We wish all teams involved in the final stages of the tournament the best of luck as they compete on the largest stage that football has to offer” said Nick Craggs, General Manager – Football, adidas.

A spokesperson for CasinoAlpha.co.nz commented on the findings: “The World Cup is the most prestigious and followed football tournament in the world, which is demonstrated in each country’s vast social media following. Today, social media completely dominates how fans interact and engage with their home teams, so it is fascinating to see how this is highlighted in each team’s social media popularity.
As the most successful nation in World Cup history, Brazil’s success is clearly reflected in the team’s social media dominance. Although Brazil have been knocked out of the 2022 World Cup following a 4-2 loss to Croatia, the team’s supporters will no doubt hope the team can convert their online success into real-life trophies in 2026."

Having the whole of African behind us is historic - Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana
Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Quaadil, has acknowledged that Morocco’s impressive record in the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar comes more significant with the rest of the African countries rallying behind them.
Following a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the quarterfinals, the Atlas Lions of Morocco became the first African side to go to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup.
Interviewed on the Happy Sports with Ohene Brenya-Bampoe on Happy98.9 FM, Her Excellency Imane Quaadil reiterated that Morocco’s historic feat comes as a proud moment not only for the country but the rest of the African continent and major parts of the world.
“I was amazed at how historic this victory was for us in Morocco not just because we became the first African country to qualify for the semis but also huge for our brothers in Africa and the Arab world. We are Africans of course and Arabs and this this is the beauty of it and we get to celebrate the victory with so many people around the world. I realized even people from Latin America were with us and cheered with us in through the game,” she shared.
She however confessed that despite the boisterous support, the team is also under pressure to deliver in the subsequent game of the competition.
“Of course, this also puts a lot of pressure on the team because we have to deliver not only for the Moroccan people but also for Africans and for the Arab world and even Latin America.”
She continued, “We all saw the joy of the Emery of Qatar cheering Morocco as we won so it was a great joy to see. He was there all the way and also cheering for us and we’re really proud of that. We have also seen on social media so many Presidents of other African countries congratulating His Majesty and all the Moroccan people for this victory and we are very proud of that. There were scenes in the streets of Ghana, Senegal, Niger, Cote D’Ivoire, and everywhere in the world. It’s huge for us.”
Morocco is set to face France in the semi-finals of the competition on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, as they remain confident of lifting the trophy for the first time in history.

Otto Addo delivers special message after coaching Ghana at World Cup
Otto Addo stated that he feels honoured to have fulfilled his dream of coaching Ghana at the World Cup, in addition to playing for the Black Stars at the global tournament.
The former Ghana international was a member of the Ghana squad for their first tournament in Germany and made an appearance. Sixteen years later, he was in the dugout giving instructions to players as Ghana won one of three games in Qatar.
"16 years apart but the feeling is the same. It was always an honour and a blessing to represent the culture, hard work and the passion of our nation at the world stage. Let’s use the power of football and our love for the game to build and grow together. Ghana Osey!!!!" Addo wrote on Instagram.
Otto Addo resigned as Ghana's coach following the Black Stars’ exit last Friday at the hands of Uruguay.
He will concentrate on his role as a trainer scout at German club Borussia Dortmund.
Otto Addo was named interim manager in March and was confirmed as substantive coach after leading the Black Stars to secure World Cup qualification at the expense of Nigeria.
Ghana failed to impress in Qatar, winning one and losing two of three group games. They began their campaign with a 3-2 defeat, recovered against South Korea, and then failed to beat Uruguay.
