During the camp’s 6 additional workshops, another group of young people from Bolnisi studied various photographic genres, learned about the principles of camera operation, and discovered how visual art can become a tool to encourage positive change in the community.

გამოფენაზე წარმოდგენილი იყო არტისტების საბა გორგოძის, გიორგი ყოლბაიასა და მარტინა დელა ვალეს მიერ Magic Carpets-ის სახელოვნებო რეზიდენციის ფარგლებში შექმნილი ნამუშევრები, ასევე ბოლნისელი მოზარდების მიერ „ვიზუალური თხრობა ცვლილებებისთვის“ საგრანტო პროგრამის ფარგლებში განხორციელებული მულტიმედიური პროექტები.

Final gathering in Bolnisi📸

The exhibition brought together works created during the Magic Carpets art residency by artists Saba Gorgodze, Giorgi Kolbaia, and Martina della Valle, alongside multimedia projects developed by Bolnisi teenagers as part of the Visual Storytelling for Changes Grant Program.

Through photography and multimedia, the exhibition reflected personal stories, community voices, and creative approaches to social change. From mentorship and learning to independent, youth-led projects, this final presentation marked the end of a collaborative process where visual storytelling became a tool for expression, connection, and civic engagement.

We are deeply thankful to everyone who took part in and supported this journey!

რეზიდენციის ფარგლებში, საბა და გიორგი ახალგაზრდული საგანმანათლებლო პროგრამის „ვიზუალური თხრობის ბანაკის“ მენტორები იყვნენ. პროგრამის განმავლობაში მონაწილეებმა შეისწავლეს სხავდასხვა ფოტოგრაფიული ჟანრები, გაეცნენ კამერების მუშაობის პრინციპებს და აღმოაჩინეს თუ როგორ შეიძლება ვიზუალური ხელოვნება იქცეს ინტრუმენტად თემში პოზიტიური ცვლილებების წასახალისებლად.

Saba Gorgodze and Giorgi Kolbaia on their residency in Bolnisi 📸

As part of their residency, Saba and Giorgi mentored the youth educational program Visual Storytelling Camp.
Throughout the program, participants explored a wide range of themes, learned how different types of cameras work, experimented with photographic genres, and discovered how visual arts can become a powerful tool for positive change within their communities.

Following the educational phase, Saba and Giorgi continued mentoring three groups within a grants program. Using the skills and knowledge they had gained, the young storytellers developed their own multimedia projects, translating personal and community narratives into meaningful visual works.

The project “Visual Education School: An Alternative Tool for Civic Development” is carried out by the Photography & Multimedia Center, in partnership with the Tbilisi Photo Festival, with support from the Magic Carpets and Embassy of the Netherlands in Georgia . “From Photographic Concept to Presentation-Ready Project” – a masterclass by award winning Polish documentary photographer Justyna Mielnikiewicz📸
How to transform a photographic project into a book, a zine, an exhibition, or a presentation-ready format.
This masterclass focuses on the process of transforming a photographic project into a coherent art object - from an initial concept to a finished form such as a photobook, zine, exhibition, PDF, or portfolio presentation. The masterclass consists of two parts: a lecture and an interactive session. During the lecture, drawing on her own publishing and exhibition practice, as well as selected examples from contemporary photographers, Justyna Mielnikiewicz will guide participants through the key stages of shaping, editing, and materializing a body of photographic work. During an interactive session, seven preselected participants will present their projects and take part in a Q&A with the lecturer, followed by audience discussion.
Please note that participation in the masterclass is free, however registration is required for both masterclass sessions.
Masterclass participants who wish to submit their original projects for discussion in the interactive session should submit a PDF of their projects by February 2. The PDF should include up to 25 photos, a project title, and a description. To submit projects, see the registration form.
Authors of selected projects will be contacted in advance of the masterclass.

Martina della Valle on her residency in Bolnisi 📸

As part of her residency, Martina led a workshop at the Visual Storytelling Camp called “Supplement for an Archaeology of the Contemporary.” She guided participants to explore storytelling through objects.

The group of youngsters from Bolnisi created photograms from meaningful items and displayed them throughout Bolnisi - in shops, beauty salons, bakeries, and more - turning the city into an open exhibition.

Watch how Martina and the participants transformed everyday items into stories that connect people and place.

The Visual Storytelling Camp has officially wrapped up in Bolnisi! 📸

Over the past days, young participants (ages 12–17) immersed themselves in the world of photography and visual storytelling. Guided by photographers Saba Gorgodze and Giorgi Kolbaia, they explored a variety of themes, learned how different types of cameras work, experimented with genres, and discovered how visual arts can be a powerful tool for positive change in their communities.

We are excited to see how they will continue using photography and video to express their ideas and drive meaningful change in the Grant Program starting next week!

This educational program is part of the project “Visual Education School: An Alternative Tool for Civic Development.”
The project is implemented by the Photography & Multimedia Center, in partnership with the Tbilisi Photo Festival, with the support of Magic Carpets and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia.

ბანაკის ფარგლებში, არტისტ მარტინა დელა ვალეს სპეციალურმა ვორქშოფმა - „თანამედროვე არქეოლოგიის დანართი“ - მონაწილეებს მნიშვნელოვანი ნივთებით ამბის თხრობის გზები გააცნო.

მონაწილეებმა იმსჯელეს იმაზე, თუ როგორ შეიძლება ყოველდღიური ნივთების დახმარებით ჩვენი ცხოვრების ისტორია მომავალ თაობებს მოვუყვეთ. შეარჩიეს მნიშვნელოვანი ნივთები, რომელთაც ყოველდღიურად იყენებენ, ან რომლებიც საუკეთესოდ წარმოადგენენ მათ იდენტობას, ოჯახურ ტრადიციებს ან ბოლნისურ ყოველდღიურობას.

Visual Storytelling Camp – Bolnisi📸

Artist Martina della Valle’s special workshop within the Camp - “Supplement for an Archaeology of the Contemporary” explored storytelling through objects.

Participants reflected on how everyday items could tell the story of our lives to future generations. They examined the objects around them and selected items that were meaningful - things they use daily, sometimes almost forgetting about them, or objects that best represent their identity, family traditions, or life in Bolnisi.

Participants created photograms with these objects and displayed them all around Bolnisi - in shops, beauty salons, bakeries, and more. During the workshop, the city itself became an exhibition space, allowing participants to share their works with the community.

The educational course is implemented as part of the project “Visual Education School: An Alternative Tool for Civic Development.” The project is carried out by the Photography & Multimedia Center, in partnership with the Tbilisi Photo Festival, with support from the .eu and Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia. მარტინა დელა ვალე გამოსახულებასთან მუშაობს. მისი კვლევა იწყება ფოტოგრაფიის ტექნიკური საფუძვლებით და ვითარდება სხავდსახვა მედიაში, იღებს განსხვავებულ ფორმას იმ ადგილებზე და ამბებზე დაყრდნობით, საიდანაც ისინი აღმოცენდებიან - შავ-თეთრი ფოტოგრაფიული ბეჭდვით დაწყებული, ადგილ-სპეციფიკური ინსტალაციებით, ვიდეო და ნახატით დასრულებული.

Introducing another participating artist in the ongoing art residency in Bolnisi - Martina della Valle.

Martina della Valle works with images and photography. Her research moves from the basics of photographic technique, and develops through various media taking different forms according to the places or the stories in which it grows; from b/w photographic printing to site-specific installation, from video to drawing.
She currently lives and works in Berlin.

During her time in Bolnisi, Martina will lead workshops for local youth, exploring the power of visual storytelling and creative engagement with the community.

This residency, which is implemented within the framework of the Creative Europe platform Magic Carpets, brings together international and Georgian multidisciplinary artists and enables the local community to be involved in artistic research in order to create new interdisciplinary narratives and stories.

სახელოვნებო რეზიდენცია, რომელიც შემოქმედებითი ევროპის პლატფორმის Magic Carpets-ის ფარგლებში ხორციელდება, საერთაშორისო და ქართველი მულტიდისციპლინარული არტისტებისთვისაა განკუთვნილი. მის ფარგლებში ადგილობრივი თემი აქტიურად ებმება პროცესში და მოწვეულ არტისტებთან ერთად ინტერდისციპლინარულ ნარატივებსა და ისტორიებს ქმნის.

Introducing another participating artist in the ongoing art residency in Bolnisi, photographer Giorgi Kolbaia.

Giorgi Kolbaia is a Georgian photographer and a co-founder of "Alikvali", a space for visual arts in Tbilisi, Georgia. He has collaborated with numerous local and international magazines, Galleries and NGOs: Indigo Magazine, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Goethe Institute, Heinrich Boell Foundation and others. His recent article, "Anger and The Resistance," published in Indigo magazine, received the award for Best Photo-Reportage from the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics.

During his time in Bolnisi, Giorgi will lead workshops and mentorship sessions for local youth, exploring the power of visual storytelling and creative engagement with the community.

This residency, which is implemented within the framework of the Creative Europe platform Magic Carpets, brings together international and Georgian multidisciplinary artists and enables the local community to be involved in artistic research in order to create new interdisciplinary narratives and stories.

წარმოგიდგენთ ერთ-ერთ მონაწილე არტისტს - ფოტოგრაფ საბა გორგოძეს.

ფოტოგრაფია საბას მხატვრული თვითგამოხატვის მთავარი მედიუმია. მისი ნამუშევრები მერყეობს კონცეპტუალურსა და დოკუმენტურ ფოტოგრაფიას შორის, ხოლო პროცესს ახასიათებს ხანგრძლივი ფიქრი და დაკვირვება - ზოგჯერ წლების განმავლობაში - კამერის ხელში აღებამდე.

საბას ფოტოგრაფია უხეში და ამავე დროს ბუნებრივად დახვეწილი ესთეტიკური ვიზუალების ნაზავია, სადაც სუბიექტი ხშირად იფარება ხაზებითა და ჩრდილებით გამოხატული იდეებისა და კონცეფციების სასარგებლოდ. მისი შავ-თეთრის არჩევანი შესაძლებლობას იძლევა ახლებურად გამოიკვლიოს როგორც საკუთარი სენსორული გამოცდილება, ისე დაკვირვების ობიექტი. ეს მონოქრომული მიდგომა ხსნის აბსტრაქციის შესაძლებლობას, სუბიექტებს ანიჭებს ალტერნატიულ მნიშვნელობასა და ფორმას, გარდაქმნის მათ უცნობ, მაგრამ ნაცნობ და ზოგჯერ უცნაურ ვიზუალებად.

We’re thrilled to announce the start of the artist residency in Bolnisi, Georgia within the Magic Carpets program💙

Introducing one of the artists - photographer Saba Gorgodze.

Photography is the prime medium for Saba’s artistic expression. His work oscillates between conceptual and documentary photography and his process is characterised by long periods of reflection and observation, at times involving years of thought before picking up the camera.

Saba’s photographs are a blend of raw and naturally refined aesthetic visuals, often obscuring the subject in favour of ideas and concepts expressed through lines and shadows. His choice of black and white allows for a fresh exploration of his own sensory experience and the subject of observation. This monochrome approach opens the door to a degree of abstraction, infusing his subjects with alternative meaning and form, transforming them into unidentifiable yet familiar and at times uncanny visuals.

During his time in Bolnisi, Saba will lead workshops and mentorship sessions for local youth, exploring the power of visual storytelling and creative engagement with the community.

This residency brings together international and Georgian multidisciplinary artists and enables the local community to be involved in artistic research in order to create new interdisciplinary narratives and stories.
