It's Tuesday, day number two in our TGBNR 2020 race week.
The alarm clock rings very early. Andre Meyer (Coursedirector) and Peter Gottwald (Racedirector) leave the hotel at 0700 h for a short morning run of about 10 k on the boulevard. This refreshes and clears the mind for a busy day. Hugh Jones, Secretary General of AIMS, former marathon runner and winner of the London Marathon, and Irakli Kobidze will join them. Shower and breakfast. Instant human – just add coffee!
The board of AIMS has a meeting at 0900. About 20 people can be found in the meeting room of the Hotel Colosseum Marina. Niko Sheklashvili and Natia Jgenti have the room prepared perfectly.
Around 1000 there is a meeting of the race organization team. Niko Sheklashvili, Inga Getsadze, Andre Meyer and Peter Gottwald talk through all the details again so that everything is in the right place at the right time on race day. Salome Sharvadze joined later. As the marketing director of the race, she is responsible, among other things, for the sponsors to be represented in the start and finish area as agreed.
At the airport, our special volunteers have their hands full, greet the numerous arriving delegates, provide important information and have them brought to the hotels with the permanent shuttle service.
In addition, Khatia Tchapodze and Peter Maisenbacher have to be picked up from the train station. They moderate both the congress and the race. Both come from Tbilisi by train.
In the late morning Andre Meyer and Peter Gottwald ride the course with their bicycles. It's about the exact positions of the kilometer signs, the barriers, the refreshment points, the volunteers, the music, the medical service and other important signs. A spray can is always with them to refresh the marks. At the same time, Inga Getsadze is busy giving our supplier Pixel the last briefings for the creation of the kilometer signs and the starting block signs.
Natia Jgenti and Torsten Weller meet at the Hotel Hilton. Last details for the congress will be discussed. There are many video presentations and the system has to work properly from the start. The large AIMS banner above the entrance to the congress hall has already been installed by many hard-working helpers.
Lunch break for everyone. A small snack in the restaurant of the Colosseum Marina is always possible. Then immediately back to work.
Peter Gottwald and Andre Meyer meet with Mariam Koridze. She is responsible for the smooth coordination of the approximately 160 volunteers. The first of a total of four briefings takes place in the afternoon. Like last year, our volunteers are a very important part of the event. They contribute to success with their open, friendly and hospitable manner. They are the business card of the race. Peter Gottwald will greet and motivate the volunteers. Andre Meyer and Mariam Koridze take care of the actual briefing. Every volunteer needs to know exactly what to do and when. The preparation of the video presentation is therefore of great importance.
Inga Getsadze, Niko Sheklashvili and Peter Gottwald again visit the start and finish area together with the head of the construction team, which is responsible for setting up the barrier grids, the stage and supplying the stage with electricity. Everything is going according to plan. Then the head of the medical service arrives. So we can immediately inform her about the exact schedule of the race and her location.
In the evening Peter Gottwald, Andre Meyer and Mariam Koridze drive the route again with the chief of the Batumi police. The police is important and ensures the safety of the runners. They did a great job last year. This year some positions will be organized even better.
Later in the evening, many of the delegates who had arrived so far and the race staff meet for dinner in the Colosseum Marina restaurant. A cool beer is wonderful. An international group - it's always great to gather so many nations for a race in one place with one big goal. It is moving and motivating.
A long and intense day comes to an end. I know that the entire team does everything it can to give delegates and runners an unforgettable time in Batumi. I am happy to lie in my bed, review the day and fall asleep with the sound of the waves. Before that, it occurs to me that tomorrow morning I would first like to discuss an important posting on our page with Dato Makharadze. Dato hardly needs a briefing.
