Jazz at The Hare & Hounds is a little different this week (Tuesday 18th August) as I'm performing with a trio featuring Paul Whitten and Joe Edwards. These are two musicians I enjoy playing in a trio format with (although I enjoy it just as much with other line-ups). There are so many great musicians in our local jazz scene these days and especially bass players and drummers. Paul and I go back a long way: we met when we were 18 on a jazz course in London and the head tutor was Stan Tracey. I love his playing and he is a such a melodic and swinging bass player. Joe is a much more recent addition to our scene but he has rapidly become one of the most in demand drummers around as well a favourite with audiences. Admittedly some of you might feel the Piano trio format means you’ll miss the “front line” but there is something particularly both exciting and intimate about the piano trio format and it is one I really enjoy exploring especially with these musicians.
It also gives me the opportunity to "call" the numbers as this is not something the rhythm section traditionally does. We will be playing some favourite standards with personalised arrangements as well as a number of original pieces. So do join us and hear something that sounds a bit different this Tuesday at 8pm at The Hare and Hounds. See you all there!
